  • Sharks' Jakub Skarek: Returns to AHL

Skarek was reassigned to AHL San Jose on Friday. Skarek was recalled Thursday to back up Yaroslav Askarov, as Alex Nedeljkovic (personal) was placed on non-roster injured reserve. Nedeljkovic was activated Friday in a corresponding move.

  • Sharks' Jakub Skarek: Recalled by Sharks

Skarek was called up from AHL San Jose on Thursday, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Skarek will back up Yaroslav Askarov, as Alex Nedeljkovic was placed on non-roster injured reserve due to a personal matter. Skarek was 4-2-0 with a 3.63 GAA and an .875 save percentage across six AHL appearances before his recall.

  • Sharks' Jakub Skarek: Shuts out Abbotsford

Skarek posted a 27-save shutout in AHL San Jose's 7-0 win over Abbotsford on Tuesday. Skarek took advantage of a reeling opponent, and he received plenty of support to earn his first shutout of the season. Through six outings, Skarek has a 3.63 GAA and an .875 save percentage despite posting a 4-2-0 record. It may have been a good time to make an impression -- Alex Nedeljkovic (personal) is away from the Sharks during their road trip, which likely means the big club will need to call up either Skarek or Gabriel Carriere. The latter has posted better numbers this season, but Skarek is more experienced.

  • Sharks' Jakub Skarek: Returned to minors

Skarek was reassigned to AHL San Jose on Saturday. Skarek was the backup netminder behind Alex Nedeljkovic in Friday's 4-1 preseason win over Vegas. The 25-year-old Skarek passed through waivers Wednesday, and he will begin the 2025-26 campaign in the minors.

  • Sharks' Jakub Skarek: Back in NHL

Skarek was promoted from AHL San Jose on Friday. Skarek will likely serve as the No. 2 for one or both of the Sharks' final two preseason games against the Golden Knights and Mammoth on Friday and Saturday, respectively, but is unlikely to get the start for either game. Once the team starts gearing up for Opening Night versus Vegas on Thursday, look for Skarek to be shipped back down to AHL San Jose.

  • Sharks' Jakub Skarek: First off Monday

Skarek was the first goalie off the ice during Monday's morning skate, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports, signaling that he's expected to get the road start during the Sharks' preseason matchup against Anaheim. Skarek signed a one-year deal with the Sharks during the offseason, and he'll make his preseason debut Monday. However, it's not yet clear whether he'll play the whole game against the Ducks. Skarek made his NHL debut for the Islanders last year and will likely struggle to see much playing time for the Sharks behind Yaroslav Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic this season.

  • Sharks' Jakub Skarek: Agrees to one-year deal

Skarek signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Sharks on Thursday. Skarek was expected to join HIFK of Finland's Liiga for the 2025-26 campaign, but it seems he decided to pursue a different opportunity. The goaltender had a 3.52 GAA and an .884 save percentage in 22 regular-season outings with AHL Bridgeport in 2024-25. He also appeared in two NHL games with the Islanders last season, posting a record of 0-1-0 with a 3.95 GAA and an .872 save percentage. The 25-year-old will probably start 2025-26 in the minors, though he might get an opportunity to play at the top level if Yaroslav Askarov or Alex Nedeljkovic miss some time due to injury.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Returned to AHL

Skarek was assigned to AHL Bridgeport on Sunday, Stefen Rosner of NHL.com reports. The Islanders activated Marcus Hogberg (upper body) from injured reserve in a corresponding move to occupy the backup role behind Ilya Sorokin. The 25-year-old Skarek has appeared in two NHL games this season, stopping 34 of 39 shots en route to a record of 0-1-0.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Solid in relief duty Tuesday

Skarek stopped all seven shots he faced in relief during Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Rangers. Skarek looked solid between the pipes in the third period after replacing Ilya Sorokin, who allowed five goals on 11 shots before being replaced at the start of the third period. Skarek has made just two appearances (one start) this season, stopping 34 of 39 shots and posting a 3.95 GAA.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Concedes five goals in debut

Skarek stopped 27 of 32 shots in Sunday's 6-3 road loss to the Panthers. The Islanders allowed two goals in each period, with the Panthers' final tally going into an empty net. The 25-year-old Skarek was making his NHL debut and proved no match for the reigning Stanly Cup champions. Skarek should work as Ilya Sorokin's backup until one of Semyon Varlamov (lower body) or Marcus Hogberg (upper body) gains clearance to return.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Shipped back to minors

Skarek was returned to AHL Bridgeport on Monday, per Stefen Rosner of NHL.com. Skarek suited up against Utah on Saturday, serving as the No. 2 option behind Marcus Hogberg while Ilya Sorokin (illness) was unavailable. The decision to return Skarek to the minors should be an indication that Sorokin will at least be healthy enough to fill the backup role when the Islanders face off with the Senators on Tuesday.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Recalled Saturday

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Goalie of the month

Skarek was named goalie of the month for Bridgeport of the AHL, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Skarek went 5-0-2 with a 1.98 GAA and .935 save percentage in seven games in January. Those numbers could make it easier for the Islanders to consider a trade of Semyon Varlamov at the NHL trade deadline. Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin have pretty much split the starting job over the past two seasons. However, with the Islanders still up against the salary cap, they could decide to move on from Varlamov and save his $5 million versus the cap next season. Skarek will likely be the backup to Sorokin if that's the case.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Assigned to AHL affiliate

Skarek was assigned to AHL Bridgeport on Wednesday. Ilya Sorokin and Cory Schneider are currently serving as the Islanders' top-two netminders, and Semyon Varlamov (undisclosed) should be ready to return soon, so there's no reason for the team to carry Skarek as a fourth goalie. The 21-year-old Skarek will undoubtedly spend most of the campaign in the minors.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Up to taxi squad Wednesday

Skarek was promoted to the taxi squad Wednesday, per CapFriendly. Cory Schneider was assigned to AHL Bridgeport on a conditioning loan, so Skarek will serve as the No. 3 goalie for the Islanders. Once Schneider's loan is done, Skarek will likely return to the minors.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Missing again Tuesday

Skarek was not on the ice for the second day in a row Tuesday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Skarek almost certainly is fourth on the team depth chart, so his chances of actually playing in any games are pretty much nil. Heading into the play-in series against Florida, the Isles figure to utilize Seymon Varlamov between the pipes.
