Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona score: Simeone beats Blaugrana for first time in La Liga
Barca gifted three points to Atleti on Saturday
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone earned his first ever win over Barcelona in La Liga play on Saturday, downing Lionel Messi and company 1-0. In his 18th match against Barca, it was a goal from Yannick Carrasco that sealed it, thanks to an error from Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen just before half time.
Barcelona once again looked like the complete opposite of what we've seen from them in the Champions League, failing to finish any of their 13 chances, making Jan Oblak's day fairly easy in the end due to a lack of precision.
The win moves Atleti to the top of the table, even with Real Sociedad, while Barca remain in 10th.
Here are three takeaways from the match:
Ter Stegen at fault for loss
The German goalkeeper had the biggest blunder of the night on a ball over the top, choosing to come out a startling distance from goal, rather than retreating to his line to let his defenders deal with the situation. Sure, Carrasco's sublime touch, rounding Ter Stegen and giving him a site of a gaping empty goal was absolutely delightful, but Ter Stegen put himself in a situation that the Belgian winger took advantage of with aplomb.
That poor judgement gave Atleti their best chance, and in the end it gave them their win. Take a look:
An unfortunate error by a usually disciplined goalkeeper. That's going to be a tough one to swallow.
A deserved result for Atleti
While Atletico didn't do a whole lot in attack themselves, putting just one shot other than Carrasco's on goal, what they were able to do in defense caused Barca plenty of trouble. Atleti were physical and pressed as always, but they also read the passing lanes very well, eliminating numerous potential chances thanks to Jose Maria Gimenez.
Not allowing a goal to Barca is even more impressive when you consider that Atleti didn't even play the first 84 minutes with a true defensive midfielder until Geoffrey Kondogbia came in as a late sub.
Potential double loss for Ronald Koeman
Barca coach Ronald Koeman might have lost more than just a match. Starting defender Gerard Pique came off with a leg injury, and it was a nasty one, as his knee bent following a collision.
Here's the video, but a fair warning that it is a bit hard to look at:
Now, we don't want to speculate as to what the injury is or its severity, but that doesn't look good at all. Pique is a club legend and even though his level of play has been inconsistent this season, it's hard to imagine what Barcelona will look like if he's forced to miss a lengthy spell.
Barca go to Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday in the Champions League.
Atletico Madrid 1, Barcelona 0 (FT)
⚽ Atletico: Yannick Carrasco (45+3')
70' Lots of space for Atleti in attack as Barca go forward in numbers. Game feels like it has another goal in it as Diego Costa comes on for Los Colchoneros.
58' What a miss! A great ball into the box to Lenglet, but he heads it right at Oblak! Had the entire goal to aim, and heads Messi's cross right at the goalkeeper.
