Bayern Munich-Atletico Madrid score: Reigning Champions League winners pick up where they left off

tolisso-bayern.jpg

Bayern Munich's Champions League domination continued Wednesday with a brilliant and clinical 4-0 thumping of Atletico Madrid on Matchday 1. Atleti had just one shot on goal with Luis Suarez and Joao Felix neutralized, while Kingsley Coman picked up where he left off for Bayern. He followed up his winning goal in August's Champions League final with two in this one, including the winner for the reigning European champs.

Bayern led 2-0 at the break, controlled the pace throughout and put it away in the second half in a display that featured some must-see goals. Leon Goretzka and Corentin Tolisso also scored in the match.

Atleti entered this match as La Liga's only undefeated team, and while they are still undefeated in the league, this scoreline gives a lot of hope to the other teams in Group A: Red Bull Salzburg and Lokomotiv Moscow.

Here are three takeaways from the match:

Bayern Munich 4, Atletico Madrid 0 (FT)

⚽ Bayern: Kingsley Coman (28')
⚽ Bayern: Leon Goretzka (41')
⚽ Bayern: Corentin Tolisso (66')
⚽ Bayern: Coman (72')

Bayern made sloppy Atleti pay

It was an off day for Atletico. They weren't sharp, they lacked awareness and Bayern put them to the sword time and time again. The poor positioning defensively of Atletico was a factor, but the sharpness of Bayern made all of the difference, and it came on both ends.

Here are the goals, and I want you to focus on that first one by Coman. Look how Joshua Kimmich recovers the ball and quickly makes the pass. Up to that point, a great play. But that pass to Coman, served to him on a platter... it's only a pass top-level superstars can make consistently. Kimmich is one of them.

That first goal was enough, but there was no stopping Bayern on this night. They took one of the best defensive teams in the world and made them look like a Sunday league defense.

Coman is coming into his own

No Serge Gnabry due to him testing positive for COVID-19 meant Coman, the hero of the UCL final, got the start. And he delivered big time. His two goals were sensational, but his second goal carved up Atleti's defense like a Thanksgiving turkey.

As a player once viewed as not good enough for his former club, he is delivering now for one of the world's biggest clubs.

Sounds a lot like Gnabry's career path as well. And Bayern now have both of them..

German side a tier above the rest

When looking at the contenders in this cup, it really feels like Bayern Munich and everybody else. Real Madrid were poor, Barcelona are still looking to get on the same page, Manchester City have a defense that is concerning, Juventus always seem to choke and so on and so forth.

There isn't a team in the world right now that has that balance of great attack and great defense. Because of that, and evident by Wednesday's display, it's Bayern not on their own tier, but on their own planet.

To beat Atleti is one thing -- to dominates them like that, it's about as impressive as beating Barcelona by six goals.
