Eighteen of the Premier League's 20 teams were in action on Boxing Day

With Christmas is in the rear-view mirror, Thursday was Boxing Day and one of the biggest dates of the Premier League season. Eighteen of the 20 Premier League teams were in action Thursday (Manchester City and Wolves play Friday), and the day saw two coaches making their debuts, Chelsea suffering a stunning defeat, Manchester United getting back to a positive result and Liverpool blowing open the title race.

Liverpool leaves no doubt vs. Leicester

First-place Liverpool showed why it has such a big lead atop the league table. The Reds went to King Power Stadium and dominated second-place Leicester City in a 4-0 win, growing their Premier League lead to 13 points. Here are three takeaways from the match.

Manchester United puts together dominant performance 

There is the Manchester United most expect to see. After losing at lowly Watford, United's attack came to life in a 4-1 win over Newcastle where Anthony Martial (two goals), Marcus Rashford (one goal) and Mason Greenwood (one goal) all looked in sync and dominant. The Red Devils had 22 shots and had one of their best outputs of the season to get things going once again in the right direction. The win sees United now just four points back of fourth-place Chelsea. 

Chelsea's poor home form continues

How did Chelsea follow up the 2-0 win at Tottenham? By losing at home to Southampton 2-0, of course. The Blues lacked ideas and put just three shots on goal to lose once again at home. Don't look now, but Tottenham is just three points back of the top four, while Wolves can get within two points with a win on Friday. 

For those keeping track, Chelsea has now lost at home to West Ham, Bournemouth and Southampton in the last month. Those are the teams ranked No. 14, 16 and 17 in the 20-team table.  The Blues are 4-2-4 at home this season and 6-0-3 on the road.

Ancelotti, Arteta make debuts

The Premier League's two newest managers made their debuts on Thursday, with Carlo Ancelotti leading Everton to a late 1-0 win over Burnley thanks to a header goal from Dominique Calvert-Lewis. Arsenal, meanwhile, came from behind under Mikel Arteta to draw 1-1 at Bournemouth. Neither team showed too much, but it is also way too early to take much away from these games. The result for Everton does give the squad some breathing room in the battle for relegation, while Arsenal blew a chance to move within six points of the top four.

Wild day for relegation candidates

The relegation battle is starting to take shape, and Watford managed to grab a point to keep trending upward, while Aston Villa's 1-0 win over Norwich puts the team on the brink of getting out of the bottom three. While it was a horrible day for Norwich, not many teams had a worse day than West Ham. The Hammers blew a 1-0 lead at Crystal Palace to lose 2-1 and now just sit a point above relegation. It remains to be seen if that will be the final straw for Manuel Pellegrini as West Ham's manager.

Spurs come from behind to get key victory

Tottenham wasn't at its best, but it was enough. Spurs went down 1-0 to Brighton on an early set piece but turned it around with two goals in the second half. Harry Kane got the equalizer just minutes after the second half started, and then Christian Eriksen came off the bench with the difference-maker. He helped set up this delightful winner from Dele Alli in the 72nd minute.

Though the play was not all that great, it was a big win for Spurs to bounce back from the humbling loss to Chelsea. The win puts Tottenham firmly in fifth place and within striking distance of the top four.
