The United States men's national team broke out of their rut in a big way, defeating Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 to kick off the group stage of the Concacaf Gold Cup on Sunday. A brace from Malik Tillman and a brace of assists from Diego Luna were enough for the USMNT to break their four-game losing streak, while Brenden Aaronson added his first goal for the USMNT since 2023.
Haji Wright also added a goal off the bench in what a was a true team effort for the USMNT. Tillman's goals were also his first for the USMNT, an important moment for a dual-national recruit who has yet to show what he can do for the national team despite his strong play for PSV.
Kicking off the Gold Cup, the USMNT took more than 20 shots and couldn't have started this off in stronger fashion. With an eye on winning the tournament, the USMNT will need to continue this pace facing Saudi Arabia and Haiti in order to make sure that they win Group D. After failing to show up in friendlies in the lead up to Gold Cup play, Pochettino has gotten an important response from his squad and now it's about keeping that momentum going.

A good win but don't get carried away
It may be tough to make sweeping conclusions from defeating Trinidad and Tobago, who are the 100th-ranked FIFA men's side, but when the USMNT have struggled no matter who they've faced recently, it's a positive moment. They tuned out the noise off the pitch about Christian Pulisic opting to stay home from the Gold Cup and withstood missing players like Weston McKennie and Tim Weah being with their clubs for the FIFA Club World Cup.
All that the USMNT can do is defeat the teams who are in front of them, and wins like this will give members of the squad a good chance at securing their own spots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil. The Gold Cup has long been a proving ground for USMNT players to make the World Cup, and with this being Pochettino's longest time with the squad in a competitive camp, players from this Gold Cup will break through. The matches will get tougher with 58th-ranked Saudi Arabia up next, and that's when we'll begin to see if this win is turning off a new leaf or just a blip.
What's next?
After a strong start to the group stage by scoring five goals, the USMNT will continue Gold Cup play by facing Saudi Arabia on Thursday, June 19. That match will take place at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, before closing out the group stage facing Haiti on Sunday, June 22 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. If the USMNT takes care of business defeating Saudi Arabia, the group could be decided before Sunday, giving Pochettino a chance to rotate his squad.
