USA 2-1 Brazil (2H)
Second half is underway!
The United States women's national team won the SheBelieves Cup for a fourth straight time on Wednesday, defeating Brazil 2-1 in the last game. Rose Lavelle made her return to the pitch after missing the previous two matches of the annual event with a muscle strain, while Mallory Swanson and Alex Morgan recorded goals in the victory. Morgan's was a sensational curler late in the first half while Swanson's goal made her the all-time leading scorer in the annual tournament and extended her scoring streak to six games.
Swanson scored four goals over three cup matches. It's the fourth tournament title for USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski and the group will now look ahead to the April window. The competition provided the squad and coaching staff with valuable minutes against top-ranked teams with wins over Brazil, Canada, and Japan. April's window will serve as further preparation for the upcoming 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Lavelle's initial absence meant more looks at the midfield and extra time for depth players. Ashley Sanchez and Kristie Mewis got extended minutes during the series and added to their case to make the World Cup roster. Andi Sullivan and Lindsey Horan looked impressive in their box-to-box responsibilities.
The tournament also presented an important time for players returning from injury. Lynn Williams and Crystal Dunn earned starts and Emily Sonnett featured off the bench for the backline. Dunn closed out her tournament with over 150 minutes, with a 60-minute shift against Brazil.
With four goals scored in three games, Swanson has tied the record with Christen Press for the longest scoring streak with six games since 2020. She has seven goals through 2023 to date and leads the national team in total goals scored this year. Her seventh goal ended up being the game-winner against Brazil.
Many USWNT players will return to their NWSL clubs for preseason with the regular season set to begin on March 25. There are just two official FIFA international windows remaining until World Cup. Two-game windows are set for April and June before teams begin gathering for the World Cup.
90' Ludmila subs into the match fro Brazil and she gets on the scoreboard! It's 2-1 with three minutes of stoppage time added.
63' Lavelle breaks the lines and it's Swanson on the end of the ball through, she's quick on the reaction inside the box and her shot beats the keeper near post.
60' Brazil has pair of good sequences thanks to Kerolin but Naeher's positioning has won out against the dangerous looks.
