The United States women's national team defeated Jamaica 5-0 on Thursday evening in Monterrey, Mexico during Concacaf W Championship group play. Sophia Smith and Rose Lavelle both recorded goals during the game, the former scoring twice, and Kristie Mewis converted a penalty kick. Trinity Rodman made her Concacaf W Championship debut and scored the USWNT's fifth goal of the night.
The victory places the USWNT on top of Group A with one more match remaining in the group stage. Megan Rapinoe was unavailable for the match against Jamaica as she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She will be available in the final group match against Mexico along with Alex Morgan, who was given the night off against Jamaica.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the 2023 women's World Cup. The USWNT are back-to-back tournament winners and eight-time title holders. The tournament serves as the qualifiers for the 2023 women's World Cup, 2024 Olympic Games and the 2024 W Gold cup.
Here are some highlights from the lopsided victory:
Smith needed just three minutes to put the USWNT ahead by two goals against Jamaica. The Portland Thorns forward scored her first goal in the fifth minute by converting a clinical finish in the box, and she recorded a second goal minutes later. Smith was strong on the wing as she received service from defenders Naomi Girma and Sofia Huerta during the possessions.
Smith, who played the first half against Haiti in the opening match, put in another 45-minute shift for the team against Jamaica and was subbed out at halftime for Margaret Purce.
The youngest player on the USWNT roster, the 20-year-old Rodman made her first Concacaf W Championship appearance. She subbed in for her Washington Spirit teammate Ashley Hatch at the hour mark, and she scored the fifth goal of the evening for the USWNT.
The United States will square off against Mexico on Monday, July 11 in the final match of the group stage games. Kickoff is at 10 p.m. ET on Paramount+, with studio coverage beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET. The Americans last played Mexico in the host country in 2010 and lost 2-1. The USWNT went on to qualify for the 2011 World Cup during an inter-confederation play-off.

59' Lavelle makes is 3-0 for the USWNT after Ashley Sanchez makes a darting run down the wing to provide the service. The ball just sailed though the box in-between a stretched out backline and Lavelle was able to slot the ball far post.
