Boxing legend Muhammad Ali remains in the hospital Friday with more serious issues than originally believed, according to the Associated Press, which reports that Ali's family members have gathered by his bedside.

NBC News reports that Ali's condition is "grave."

Ali was taken to a Phoenix-area hospital on Thursday while battling respiratory issues stemming from his Parkinson's disease. Family spokesman Bob Gunnell said on Thursday that Ali's condition was fair and the family was expecting a short visit.

As of Friday, two people familiar with the situation told the AP that 74-year-old's condition is concerning to family members.

Ali has battled Parkinson's over the last 30 years. He's been in and out of the hospital over the last few years with his most recent visit coming in 2015 for a urinary tract infection.

An Olympic gold medalist and the only three-time lineal world heavyweight champion in boxing, Ali transcended sports in his heyday due to his incomparable ability, religious beliefs, outspokenness regarding politics and larger-than-life persona.
