Tyson Fury deemed 'medically unfit', pulls out of rematch vs. Wladimir Klitschko
Fury is reportedly dealing with mental health issues and could be institutionalized
The heavyweight championship rematch between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko has once again been called off as doctors have deemed the champion Fury is "medically unfit" to fight.
The rematch was originally supposed to take place over the summer on July 9 but was pushed back to Oct. 29 in Manchester, England after Fury suffered an ankle injury in training. Fury's camp did not specify what medical issue he is facing in their statement released on Friday.
"It is with the deepest regret that we have to announce that the world heavyweight championship rematch between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko will not be going ahead," promoter Mick Hennessy said in a statement. "Tyson has, this week, been declared medically unfit to fight. Medical specialists have advised that the condition is too severe to allow him to participate in the rematch and that he will require treatment before going back into the ring.
"Tyson will now immediately undergo the treatment he needs to make a full recovery. We and Tyson wish to express our sincerest apologies to all those concerned with the event and all the boxing fans who had been looking forward to the rematch. Tyson is understandably devastated by the development.
"We will be making a further statement in due course. Until then, we ask that Tyson and his family be given the privacy and the space he needs to recover during this difficult time."
ESPN's Dan Rafael reports that sources close to Fury say he is dealing with mental health issues and may be institutionalized.
Fury became the lineal heavyweight champion when he stunned Klitschko with a unanimous decision victory to win the WBO, IBO and IBF belts. He was later stripped of the IBF belt for not taking the mandatory bout to retain the title before a rematch with Klitschko.
