LSU does not have a starting quarterback right now. Coach Ed Orgeron has maintained that the spot is open during spring camp. Danny Etling, who started last season for the Tigers, has been considered the leader in the competition, but he may have taken a step back recently.

Orgeron says that Etling underwent a "minor back procedure" on Monday. Orgeron wouldn't go into details as to what the procedure entailed, but I don't know of many "minor" back procedures. Sure, relative to other back procedures, some are major and others are minor, but back injuries are always scary things, as are all surgeries on the back.

The good news is that Orgeron says Etling's recovery shouldn't take a lot of time, and that the procedure was to help alleviate the back pain -- alarm bells go off in my head -- Etling has been experiencing for several months.

Perhaps that back pain helps explain Etling's recent performance in LSU's spring game. In the scrimmage, Etling completed only four of his 11 pass attempts for 53 yards.

He played in 11 games for the Tigers last season, throwing for 2,123 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions.
