"It's better to predict dramatic things that don't happen than boring things that do." -Nathan Myhrvold, former CTO at Microsoft.

Well sure, as long as you aren't concerned with being right.

It's time for the CBS Sports Fantasy Baseball predictions and we do care about being right.

We spent countless hours pouring over the data to give you the most accurate predictions we possibly could. OK, Scott spent a little more time than Al and I did, but we all tried really hard.

The only negative in that quest for accuracy was consensus that formed unintentionally. We'll start in the American League where the Central was the only division to provide any intrigue.

AL East

The Baltimore Orioles were the chalk pick here, with all of us picking the Rays to finish last. Scott and I both like the Red Sox to be the biggest challengers and we both have them in the wild card. As a sign of the times, none of us picked the Yankees to finish better than third.

AL Central

There was no consensus in the Central other than all of us putting the Indians in the playoffs. Scott and I both chose them as a wild card and Al thinks they’ll leap all the way to the top of the division. The most surprising thing here is that neither Scott nor Al have the defending American League champions in the playoffs.

AL West

All three of us like the Mariners to win this division and only Al thinks the AL West produces a wild card team. This was the only American League division where we all three of us selected the same teams in first and second place. Al is the most optimistic about the young Astros, projecting them to jump up to third place.

NL East

No surprise here, as we all picked the Nationals to win the division and the Phillies to finish last. The one team we aren’t so sure about is the Mets. Al picked them to finish second and earn a wild card while I have them finishing fourth behind the Braves. Scott and I both have the Marlins in second place, but I was the only one brave enough to project them into the playoffs.

NL Central

Al and Scott have both the Cardinals and Pirates in the playoffs, if not in the same order. I took the Pirates to win the division and excluded the Cardinals completely. Biggest shock? Scott taking the Cubs to finish second in the division and earn a spot in the playoffs.

NL West

We all see the NL West the same in spots one through three and that illustrates why I chose the Padres from this division for the wild card. The Padres get 36 games against the Diamondbacks and Rockies and I expect them to be two of the bottom four teams in the league.

Playoffs

At this point I feel like I should clarify that we did not discuss these picks before releasing them. That makes it at least a little bit odd that we all picked the Nationals to win the World Series, with both Scott and I choosing the Orioles to win the American League. You could make a pretty good case that the Orioles would have been there last year if not for a rash of injuries and bad luck.

Awards

If you thought there was too much agreement on the division winners then you won’t like our Rookie of the Year picks. The Cy Young votes were a little more interesting. You could say I was trying to be too cute by picking Max Scherzer and you may not be wrong. No one got cute with AL MVP, largely because of how difficult it is to make an argument against the best player in baseball.
