2016 MLB Draft: Phillies select high school outfielder Mickey Moniak No. 1 overall

Thursday night, the Philadelphia Phillies selected high school outfielder Mickey Moniak with the first pick of the 2016 First Year Player Draft. Moniak hails from La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, California.

Moniak is the first high school outfielder selected first overall since the Diamondbacks took Justin Upton in 2005, though there is a bit of a catch. Bryce Harper got his GED as a high school sophomore and enrolled in junior college in 2010, allowing him to be draft-eligible in what would have been his junior year of high school.

The draft gurus at both Baseball America and MLB.com ranked Moniak as the fifth-best prospect in the 2016 draft class. Here is a snippet of MLB.com's free scouting report:

Moniak makes consistent hard contact against high levels of competition. He has a good approach at the plate and can spray line drives to all fields. Moniak has more doubles power now, but there's room in his frame to add strength. His above-average speed works on both sides of the ball, and some see a future Gold Glove caliber center fielder. Moniak gets high marks for his baseball instincts and effort.

Moniak, 18, hit .476 with seven home runs, 13 walks, and six strikeouts in 29 games this spring. He played on USA Baseball's 18-and-under National Team last summer. Here's some video of Moniak in action:

The first-overall pick comes with a $9,015,000 slot value. Moniak will sign for something less than that -- Dansby Swanson, the first overall pick in 2015, signed for $6.5 million -- and the Phillies will redirect the draft pool savings to later picks.

The signing deadline for draft picks in July 15. Moniak is committed to UCLA but is expected to sign.
