CHICAGO -- While Game 6 of the NLCS between the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers unfolds very much in the favor of the hosts, fans have gathered outside Wrigley Field in anticipation of the team's first pennant since 1945.

People thronged along Clark Street and on the streets and sidewalks of Sheffield. The city shut down a long stretch of Addison so the buses could queue. You've seen crowd shots before, of course. But then there's one that says pretty much all there is to say about a long-simmering pennant and baseball's best neighborhood ....

That's Chicago Fire Station 78, on the 1000 block of Waveland Avenue just beyond Wrigley's left field wall ...

They keep their doors open when it's not winter. These are not firefighters you see. These are ticketless Cubs fans watching Game 6 on the rather modest firehouse television. At the far right, you see some cops watching the game, too. Around the time this photo was taken, one of the firefighters said, "People, you can't watch the game in here."

He didn't sound like he meant it, though.
