The Major League Baseball Players Association held its ceremony for the Players Choice Awards on Wednesday night. The player balloting took place in the middle of September.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway was the NL comeback player of the year, as it was awarded to the late Jose Fernandez. Again, the voting took place in the middle of September, so it isn't as though this was awarded on sentiment. Fernandez was coming off an injury-shortened season (Tommy John) and went 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA and 253 strikeouts in 182 1/3 innings before dying in a boating accident on Sept. 25.

Over in the AL, the winner was Mark Trumbo of the Orioles.

The Marvin Miller Man of the Year award is given to the player who performs both on the field and off the field with contributions to local communities and that went to Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson. He also won the Roberto Clemente Award, so let us all salute the Grandyman.

The winners in the top rookie voting were Michael Fulmer of the Tigers in the AL and Dodgers star Corey Seager in the NL.

The top pitching awards are named the "outstanding pitcher." In the NL, Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks took the honors while Rick Porcello of the Red Sox won the AL version.

What we generally call the "MVP" is a bit different in the Players Choice Awards. It's called the "outstanding player." I guess many would think it's different, given the removal of the "value" component, but that still didn't clear the way for baseball's best player, Mike Trout. Jose Altuve of the Astros won the overall Player of the Year, so he obviously also won the AL outstanding player. In the NL, Daniel Murphy of the Nationals took outstanding player honors.

The BBWAA awards come next week with Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, Cy Young and MVP votes revealed Monday through Thursday, respectively.
