Cuban star Yulieski Gurriel (was previously Gourriel) has been cleared as a free agent by Major League Baseball, so he's now free to sign with any team without limitation, reports Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com.

Gurriel, a third baseman, has been playing in the Cuban National Series since he was 17 years old and he's now 32 (as of June 9). Still, he's at the top of his game and widely considered the top international talent not playing in MLB, yet. Last season in 49 games, Gurriel hit .500/.589/.874 with 20 doubles, 15 homers 51 RBI and 55 runs. As if those numbers aren't impressive enough, he walked 38 times and struck out just three times.

Here's a look at him on the field:

Last April, Baseball America's Ben Badler ranked Gourriel as the top prospect in Cuba and gave him a "Category 5" certainty level, which is the highest. Badler notes that Jose Abreu and Yoenis Cespedes would have been ranked in this category. Badler's scouting report paints the picture of a guy with a strong arm who does pretty much everything well with a bat in his hands. The stat line from Cuba last season points to someone who could use a new challenge, that's for sure.

Take note that Gurriel hasn't played in a game since last year, so he'd likely need to work his way back up to speed in the minors before a promotion to the bigs is in order, but suffice it to say, this is someone who could help a contender this season, judging from the reports of those who have seen him play.

Speaking of which, former big-leaguer Jerry Hairston Jr. weighs in ...

As Hairston notes, there isn't a long-term window here with Gurriel being 32 years old and having zero MLB experience. Maybe he gets three or four years, but the average annual value of the contract should be pretty high.

Expect every team with any sort of spending wherewithal that could use an upgrade at third base to be involved in the bidding.
