The Indians are going to have to survive the playoffs without Yan Gomes
The catcher fractured his wrist while on rehab assignment at Double-A
The Indians on Saturday announced that catcher Yan Gomes will miss the next six-to-eight weeks because of a non-displaced fracture of his right wrist. The injury will not require surgery.
Gomes suffered the injury while on rehab assignment in Double-A. He was working his way back from a shoulder injury that landed him on the disabled list in July.
This season, Gomes, has batted a deeply disappointing .165/.198/.313 in 71 games. That comes to an OPS+ of just 28. Gomes first showed signs of offensive decline in 2015, when his OPS+ dropped to 73 from the 122 mark that he put up 223 games from 2013-14.
Roberto Perez has primarily handled the Cleveland catching duties, but he's put up just an OPS+ of 48. Chris Gimenez has been somewhat better, without approaching adequate. No surprise, then, that Tribe catchers in 2016 have combined to "hit" .184/.241/.317 -- worst in the league by a comfortable margin.
So, sure, the Indians would prefer to have Gomes back for the playoffs, but they've won this season despite getting nothing from their catchers on the offensive end.
