WATCH: Ichiro records hit No. 4,257, one more than Pete Rose's MLB-record total
It didn't take long for Ichiro to break the tie with Rose, getting his second hit of the day in the ninth inning on Wednesday
Earlier today, we brought you the news that Ichiro Suzuki picked up his 4,256th hit in his big-league and Nippon Pro Baseball careers, matching Pete Rose's MLB-record total number of hits. That's no longer the case.
Ichiro added another hit in the later stages of Wednesday's Marlins-Padres game officially giving him one more than Rose, and a legitimate claim on the "Hit King" title. He lined a shot to right field to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but the Marlins would go on to lose the game, 6-3.
Ichiro's two-hit showing on Wednesday gave him 2,979 for his big-league career. That total is good for the 28th-most in big-league history, and the second-most among active players (behind some feller named Alex Rodriguez).
Rose, of course, tallied his record hit total solely in Major League Baseball, while Ichiro's mark is a total combining his 2,979 MLB hits with his 1,278 hits in NPB.
Ichiro is almost certain to become the 26th player with 3,000 hits over the coming weeks, and he's likely to be the only player to do so this year. (One of his former teammates, Adrian Beltre, figures to join the club sometime next season.)
Although Ichiro had struggled the past few seasons, he's had a brilliant start to 2016. In 140 plate appearances, he's now hitting .349/.410/.397, all the while serving mostly in a reserve capacity.
