Orioles' Steve Pearce out to prove 2014 season wasn't a fluke
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Coming off a breakout season in 2014, it would be easy to assume Orioles first baseman/outfielder Steve Pearce will be facing a tougher challenge in 2015 as pitchers around the league study film and make adjustments.

Yet, Pearce doesn't seem worried about a potential drop-off in production.

"They adjusted to me last year," he said, per MASNsports.com. "There are constant adjustments. I never look back at it and say, 'That was an awesome year.' I felt like that is how I play. I never thought pitchers just grooved me fastballs because they knew who I was. I was still pitched pretty hard. If I play every day, I feel that is the way I can play."

Pearce, thus far, is showing his 2014 season might not be a fluke. He is batting .382 (13 for 34) with five home runs in 11 spring games.

"I am constantly working on things," Pearce said. "It is nice to be able to take it into games here and work on it knowing I have a spot on the team. In the past, it was like I gotta get a hit and you could press in spring. This year is a little less stressful, just can work on getting ready for the season."

Orioles 1B/OF Steve Pearce clubs fourth spring home run
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Orioles first baseman/outfielder Steve Pearce connected for a three-run homer off Tommy Milone in the second inning of Saturday's spring game against the Twins.

Pearce has been locked in at the plate lately, homering in four of his last five games. Despite his surge at the plate, Pearce still feels he has plenty of work left to do.

"I'm not happy with bad at-bats," he said, per MASNsports.com. "I don't care what time of year it is. I'm always trying to get better. I have a plan at the plate and I want to get consistent at-bats so I can take it into the season."

Pearce is batting .355 (11 for 31) with one double, four home runs and eight RBI in 10 spring games.

Orioles' Steve Pearce yet to see regular action this spring
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Orioles first baseman/outfielder Steve Pearce made just his fifth start in 10 spring games Wednesday, but manager Buck Showalter indicated that the versatile player will see plenty of action this spring, MLB.com reports.

"He will get plenty of [playing time], we are still three weeks away," Showalter said. "You don't want to take away from who he really is. I've had a lot of players like that, that's what made them good was knowing they worked harder and were more prepared. But with Steve, if he wasn't starting, he'd probably take 100 swings in the cage over the course of the game to be ready for that one at-bat to help the team. And now if he's doing that and playing five or six days a week, that's counterproductive."

As Pearce isn't battling for a roster spot, he hasn't hit the road with the team for away games this spring, limiting his action. There are no plans to use him at third base, but the option is still on the table for the Baltimore manager.

Orioles' Steve Pearce likely to get playing time at multiple positions
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Orioles slugger Steve Pearce expects to see playing time at multiple positions in 2015, per MLB.com. Pearce could see playing time at first base, right field, left field, third base and DH.

“It definitely will be fun,” Pearce said of being used in a versatile role. “You never know what you’re going to get. If I’m in the lineup, I’ll play anywhere.”

Pearce had a breakout season in the majors in 2014, batting .293 with a .556 slugging percentage, .930 OPS, 21 home runs, 26 doubles and 49 RBI in 102 games.

“Just a chance to show what I could do last year and getting the opportunity and seizing it,” Pearce said of what he was proud of last year. “It’s been a long road for me on that part but I’m just glad that I got the chance.

“It took a while [for the 2014 season]  to sink in. For me, last year was so fun for what we accomplished as a team. Not just my individual stats. How we surprised people like nobody said we’d do. When I look back on it that was probably the best for me.”

Orioles likely to use a combo of players to replace Markakis in RF
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Orioles manager Buck Showalter is expecting to use a few players in right field to replace Nick Markakis, who signed a free-agent deal with the Braves in the offseason.

"We're equipped to have that be a two- or three-headed player," Showalter said of the Orioles' right-field situation which could include a combination of Travis SniderSteve PearceDelmon YoungAlejandro De Aza and Chris Davis, per MLB.com. "It also allows us to keep everybody in the flow and have everybody make contributions with their skill set. But somebody steps out there and takes off with it … that's why I think Steve [Pearce] graduated a little bit from that [role as a part-time player]."
