Royals SP Kris Medlen has first bullpen session since elbow surgery
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Royals starting pitcher Kris Medlen threw his first bullpen session Wednesday since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, per The Kansas City Star. He threw 17 pitches with pitching coach Dave Eiland monitoring his progress.

“I felt like I was extremely rusty,” Medlen said. “Because I was just having trouble repeating (my delivery) and all that stuff. That’s my pitching style, and I take pride in that, and I couldn’t do it. So that was a little frustrating. But armwise, it felt like it was coming out really good. I felt strong.”

Eiland indicated Medlen would receive four days off before his next throwing session.

Royals sign Chris Young, place Kris Medlen on 60-day DL
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

The Royals announced that they've signed RHP Chris Young to a major-league contract.

Young signed a one-year, $675,000 contract with up to $5.325 million in incentive bonuses, according to the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough.

Young won Comeback Player of the Year with the Mariners last season, going 12-9 with a 3.65 ERA.

To make room for Young on the roster, the Royals placed Kris Medlen on the 60-day disabled list. Medlen is still returning from Tommy John surgery.

Kris Medlen (elbow) fine with rehab plan Royals have mapped out
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Royals starting pitcher Kris Medlen is unsure of when he will throw his first bullpen session since having Tommy John surgery last year, and that's just fine with him.

"It's just that I really don't want to know," Medlen said, per MLB.com. "I want to focus on positive things and I don't want to put any pressure on myself knowing about those things.

"I could cheat and go look at the sheet because it's all mapped out through March. I just don't want to. I literally am taking this [rehab] one day at a time. I show up every day and find out what I have to do that day and that's it."

The Royals have already indicated Medlen likely won't be up in the majors until the second half of the season, and he might not pitch in a game competitively until mid-April.

"The funny thing is, I was ready to do a bullpen session right before I signed with the Royals," Medlen said. "They just thought it was best that we take it a lot slower, which is fine with me. I'm totally confident in their plan for me.

"But right now, my whole arm feels really good. It feels like I have some snap on the ball. I even had a nice little burn in there, a good burn, like after you've had a good workout. I like it."

Royals not counting on Kris Medlen until the second half
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

The Royals do not expect pitcher Kris Medlen to return until the second half of the season.

General manager Dayton Moore told reporters he expects Medlen to be a factor down the stretch. Medlen is coming off Tommy John surgery, and the team will give him time to recover. Medlen had the surgery last March. Typically, it takes about a year for pitchers to recover, but the Royals aren't banking on Medlen being healthy right away.

Prior to having the surgery, Medlen posted a 3.11 ERA over 197 innings in 2013.

Kris Medlen lands two-year deal with Royals
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The Royals announced Thursday they signed pitcher Kris Medlen to a two-year contract, which includes a mutual option for 2017.

Medlen missed all of the 2014 season with the Braves due to Tommy John surgery. He became a free agent after he was non-tendered in early December.

Medlen is 30-13 with a 2.96 ERA in 61 career starts and 4-7 with a 2.92 ERA in 91 relief appearances. Since the start of 2010, Medlen's .674 winning percentage (31-15) ranks third in MLB among pitchers with 40-plus decisions.
