After a rather short and unremarkable tenure with the Orlando Magic, Maurice Harkless experienced an early career rejuvenation with the Portland Trail Blazers last season, Playing a big part in the team's overall success, Harkless' versatility proved to be exactly what the Blazers needed, which is why according to The Vertical's Shams Charania, Portland has agreed to re-sign the 23-year-old to a four-year, $40 million deal.

Harkless averaged just 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds last season, but he can play multiple positions and is a strong defender. He also doubled his scoring average in the playoffs in Portland's first round matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers. And at 23 years old, Harkless' game is still developing so the Blazers are betting that he will reach his prime during the length of the contract. Harkless' youth also compliments Portland's young core of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum, as they now have several core players all around the same age.

Portland has been very active this offseason and the re-signing of Harkless points to the Blazers belief that last year's team will only get better. Besides for bringing back Harkless, the Blazers also re-signed Allen Crabbe, re-signed Meyers Leonard, gave a contract extension to McCollum, signed Evan Turner and big man Festus Ezeli. Not franchise altering moves by the Blazers, yet Portland is determined to continue developing their young roster with an eye towards the future.
