Panthers' Cam Newton says LeBron James is better than Steph Curry
Cam Newton picks LeBron over Steph
Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry is a huge Carolina Panthers fan. The Panthers have been quite welcoming of Curry's fandom, even allowing him to bang their drum before Super Bowl 50 and during the regular season. Curry has also become a friend of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, congratulating him on his MVP award and proudly wearing his jersey at a Golden State practice during the NFL playoffs.
However, while Curry holds Newton in high regard, the Panthers QB is a bit of a realist when it comes to the Warriors superstar. For Newton, Curry is an unbelievable player but he is not as good as LeBron James.
At least that's what Newton said on a sports radio show in Charlotte (transcribed by ESPN's David Newton):
"A person asked me, 'Well, is Steph Curry the best basketball player on the planet?'" Newton said. "I said, 'No.' I said, 'Steph Curry is the best basketball player on the best team on the planet.'
"I still think LeBron is [the best player]. He's 6-7, athletic, can do anything on the court. But LeBron is not on the best team. Going back to what I was saying, the power of team will always be better than the power of skill."
Newton is also friends with LeBron though so perhaps that's why he prefaced his answer by saying Curry is also really good. And this is of course Newton's opinion which he is entitled to and which you are allowed to disagree with.
But it is a bit strange that Newton isn't pledging his allegiance to Curry, like Steph has done for him. Where's the reciprocity Cam?
Either way, each player has their own merits and it is tough to say who is actually better than the other. But Newton has made his opinion known on the subject and seems pretty unwavering in his thinking.
