Russell Westbrook's Jordan-esque triple-double streak ends at 7
Westbrook scores 37 but fails to get a triple-double in Thunder's win over Celtics on Sunday
Unfortunately for Russell Westbrook, all good things must come to an end.
After recording seven consecutive triple-doubles, a feat only Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan have ever accomplished in the history of the NBA, Westbrook's streak ended on Sunday in the Thunder's 99-96 victory against the Boston Celtics.
Westbrook was four assists shy of picking up an eighth consecutive triple-double, finishing with 37 points, 12 rebounds six assists and two steals.
Despite falling short of a triple-double, Westbrook was sensational. He won a jump ball in the closing moments and scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, including a driving basket that gave the Thunder the lead with 30 seconds left.
Here's a look at Westbrook's historic triple-double streak:
- Nov. 25 vs. Nuggets: 36 points, 11 rebounds and 17 assists
- Nov. 26 vs. Pistons: 17 points, 13 rebounds, 15 assists
- Nov. 28 vs. Knicks: 27 points, 17 rebounds, 14 assists
- Nov. 30 vs. Wizards: 35 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists
- Dec. 4 vs. Pelicans: 28 points, 17 rebounds, 12 assists
- Dec. 5 vs. Hawks: 32 points, 13 rebounds, 12 assists
- Dec. 9 vs. Rockets: 27 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists
Although Westbrook's streak is over, he could likely start another one in this relatively young season. He is still averaging a triple-double at 31.1 points, 10.9 rebounds and 11.0 assists. If Westbrook can maintain those averages he will be the first player to average a triple-double since Oscar Robertson in 1961-62.
