The Lions have been using pass-catching back Theo Riddick in an expanded role over the last few weeks due to injuries to Ameer Abdullah (who is on injured reserve and not eligible to return until Week 12) and Dwayne Washington, and Riddick has only been sporadically effective on the ground. His career-high 50 carries have yielded only 171 yards, an average of 3.4 per carry. He's not exactly gotten much help from his offensive line, though, as only 59 of his rushing yards have come before contact, an average of just 1.18 per carry. When given decent blocking, as he was this past Sunday against the Eagles, he has done much better (11 carries for 49 yards).
Still, Riddick is not a bell-cow back. His strength is as a receiver. Enter Forsett, who has shown in the past that he can carry an every-down role and run between the tackles. He'd averaged 4.9 yards per carry in his career entering this season, and ran for 1,266 yards and eight touchdowns two years ago as the Ravens' featured back. Injuries limited his effectiveness last season, which was cut short when he broke his right arm in Week 11.
He did not distinguish himself in Ravens camp this year in a competition with Terrance West and Kenneth Dixon and was cut shortly before the season. He signed back with the Ravens shortly after that, but lasted only three games before being released again. He has 31 carries for 98 yards in those three games.
