Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Miles Austin caught two passes for 51 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's loss to Washington Huskies .
Austin set a season-high in yards and scored his first touchdown of the year as quarterback Sam Bradford and the Eagles' offense finally clicked for a brief stretch in the second half.
Despite limited production, Bradford has consistently targeted Austin on deep balls in the first four games, likely because of ideal coverage matchups. If Bradford can build on his best performance of the year, Austin could theoretically turn into a deep-bench option at wide receiver.
"It just seemed like it was the right thing to do," Austin said on a conference call, per ESPN.. "The team’s already great, obviously, without me. I just figured it was something I wanted to be a part of and join in and go in, full swing, and be a part of it. I grew up in Jersey, so that was part of the decision process."
Austin said the "opportunity to win" was the primary factor that led to him signing with the Eagles. His former Cowboys teammate DeMarco Murray also joined the team this offseason.
"Obviously, me and DeMarco are really close," Austin said. "So I was in communication with him as a friend when he was figuring out what he was doing in his process of being a free agent. Me and him, we were talking back and forth when he signed up with Philly. He was telling me how he experienced coming in and speaking with the coaches. It kind of reaffirmed all the positive thoughts I already had."
After spending eight seasons with the Cowboys, Austin joined the Browns in 2014. In 12 games played last year, he hauled in 47 passes for 568 yards and two touchdowns. Over his nine-year career, the 30-year-old has totaled 348 receptions for 5,049 yards and 36 touchdowns.
Veteran wide receiver
Rapoport added Austin will sign when he meets with the Eagles, as long as his physical goes well, a source said.
The 30-year-old Austin appeared in 12 games (11 starts) for the Browns last season before being placed on injured reserve with a kidney injury. Austin totaled 47 receptions for 568 yards and two touchdowns.
With wideout Josh Gordon facing a one-year suspension, the
Hawkins, a 5-7, 180-pounder, led the team with 63 grabs for 824 yards, with two touchdowns. Cleveland failed to add a wideout in last year's draft but almost certainly must address the position in the 2015 draft.
