Thompson, who tore his ACL during the 2015 regular season finale, had returned to practice in late November with hopes of eventually being activated, but as the deadline passed Wednesday it didn't happen. Pat Sims and DeShawn Williams will continue to provide depth behind Geno Atkins and Domata Peko at defensive tackle.
The defensive tackle was placed on the reserve/Phyiscally Unable to Perform list at the end of the preseason as he continued to rehab a torn ACL. Now cleared to practice, the
Thompson suffered a torn ACL in Week 17 of 2015 and missed the entirety of the Bengals' offseason program and training camp. Given the timing of his injury, he wasn't expected to be ready for the start of the regular season anyway. He's first eligible to return to action Oct. 23 for an in-state matchup against the Browns.
The move was to be expected, as Thompson had torn his ACL in the regular-season finale versus the Ravens. He figures to commence the regular season on the PUP list as well, which would subsequently sideline him for the Bengals' first six games.
