  • Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Pots 33 goals, 69 points in 2016-17

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/17/17) Ovechkin (lower body) finished the season with 33 goals and 69 points while playing in all 82 regular-season games.

That goal output is the 31-year-old's lowest over a full season since 2011-12. While that may seem alarming, it's also worth noting that he also registered his lowest average ice time (18:22) and shot total (313) since that campaign. Heading into the offseason with a couple of leg ailments suffered during the playoffs, it's fair to wonder whether the Russian winger's sub-elite results were an anomaly or a sign of things to come as his age starts to show from years of intense physical play. He should still be an early selection in most fantasy drafts for next season, but his reign as a top-of-the-line scorer may be drawing toward its inevitable end.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Will not need surgery for knee, hamstring injuries

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/12/17) Ovechkin (lower body) will not require surgery for knee and hamstring injuries sustained in the postseason, Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reports.

The knee injury was sustained during a violent collision with Nazem Kadri in Game 5 of the first round against the Maple Leafs and the 31-year-old winger injured his hamstring in Game 3 of the second round against the Penguins. Fortunately for the Capitals, the long offseason should be enough for the "Great 8" to heal from the various ailments, and he's expected to be good to go for training camp in September.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Knee, hamstring injuries affected postseason play

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/12/17) Ovechkin was specifically hampered by knee and hamstring injuries during the playoffs, Igor Eronko of Russia's Sport-Express reports.

Ovi won't be joining his fellow countrymen at the IIHF World Championship due to what the Russian Ice Hockey Federation generally described as a lower-body injury. The ever popular winger saw his point total drop for the second consecutive season -- he finished with 69 of those (33 goals, 36 assists) without missing a game -- and he struggled to a career-worst playoff mark of minus-4. It's not abundantly clear how the 31-year-old sustained his knee and hamstring maladies, but we suspect the sweeping leg hit from Toronto forward Nazem Kadri during Game 5 of the conference quarterfinals did him no favors from a health standpoint.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Won't play at Worlds due to lower-body ailment

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/11/17) Ovechkin (lower body) will not suit up for Team Russia at the IIHF World Championship, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.

The injury helps explain why Ovechkin was not his dominant self in the latter stage of their second-round series against the Penguins, with only one goal and a minus-3 rating in his last four playoff games. Washington's early exit gives the 31-year-old winger plenty of time to recover from the ailment, so he should be good to go for the start of the 2017-18 season.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Nets fifth goal of postseason

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/6/17) Ovechkin scored his fifth goal of the postseason in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Penguins.

Ovechkin has been relatively quiet, at least from an offensive perspective, during these playoffs. But he's been laying hits like a bricklayer puts down bricks -- Ovie has 54 in 11 games. The Caps need him to put more points on the board than players into the boards if they want to move to the next round.
