Top Sabres News

  • Sabres' Brodie Ziemer: Picks up two points Thursday

Ziemer scored two goals in the University of Minnesota's 6-3 win over Ohio State University on Thursday.

Ziemer is warming up and is now at 10 goals and 16 points through 18 appearances this season. He's quickly closing in on his freshman-year totals (12 goals, 23 points in 38 games). The Sabres prospect is showing growth on offense but is likely to need more time in the NCAA beyond this year.

  • Sabres' Bowen Byram: Goals in consecutive games

Byram scored a goal and blocked three shots in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Flyers.

Byram has a goal in consecutive games after going four contests without a point. The 24-year-old defenseman is up to six goals, 13 points, 39 shots on net, 34 blocked shots, 14 hits and a minus-6 rating through 27 appearances. Byram has maintained steady ice time as a trusted part of the Sabres' blue line, though he's tracking for production roughly in line with last year's 38-point output from all 82 games.

  • Sabres' Jason Zucker: Tallies on power play again

Zucker scored a power-play goal on three shots and added two hits in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Flyers.

Zucker has scored on the power play in back-to-back contests. He has four goals and four assists over seven outings since he returned from missing eight games due to an illness. The winger is up to eight goals, 15 points (six on the power play), 42 shots on net, 21 hits and a minus-7 rating through 19 appearances. Given his recent production, Zucker should have no trouble maintaining a top-six role and a spot on the top power-play unit.

  • Sabres' Colten Ellis: Blitzed in first period

Ellis stopped 29 of 34 shots in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Flyers.

Ellis gave up three goals, including two on Philadelphia power plays, in a span of 59 seconds during the first period. He allowed two more in the second before keeping things clean in the third, though it was too late to make a difference. Ellis continues to struggle to separate himself from Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Alex Lyon in the Sabres' goaltending battle. Ellis has a 4-3-0 record with a 3.40 GAA and an .892 save percentage over seven starts. It's safe to assume one of the other two goalies will get the nod Friday in Winnipeg after Ellis' lackluster performance Wednesday.

  • Sabres' Isak Rosen: Pots pair Wednesday

Rosen scored two goals in AHL Rochester's 4-3 overtime loss to Utica on Wednesday.

Rosen continues to dominate the AHL, and he's earned three goals and an assist over three outings since returning from a stint with the Sabres. For the season, he has eight goals and 16 points through 11 appearances. Rosen's continued success on offense should keep him near the front of the line for future call-ups.

  • Sabres' Colten Ellis: Starting versus Flyers

Ellis will start in goal on the road versus the Flyers on Wednesday, Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News reports.

Ellis won his last outing, stopping 22 of 24 shots in a 3-2 shootout win over the Wild on Saturday. He is still working on carving out a larger share of playing time as the Sabres balance having three goalies on their roster. The Flyers have won three of their last four games while scoring 13 times in that span.

  • Sabres' Michael Kesselring: Won't travel on road trip

Kesselring (lower body) will not travel with the Sabres for their impending six-game road trip, per Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic on Tuesday.

While the team is on the road, Kesselring will continue to rehab back in Buffalo. The right-shot blueliner has missed eight games in a row and hasn't suited up since Nov. 15 in Detroit. Buffalo's next home matchup isn't until Dec. 18 versus Philadelphia, so unless Kesselring joins the team at some point out west, he'll continue to miss a considerable amount of game action.

  • Sabres' Zach Benson: Adds two assists Monday

Benson dished out two assists in Monday's 5-1 win over the Jets.

Benson recorded his second multi-assist effort of the season Monday. He had the secondary helper on Josh Norris' goal in the first period and slid the primary assist to Norris for his tally in the third. Overall, Benson has 11 assists and 21 shots on goal through 13 games this season. While he's yet to find the back of the net this season, the 20-year-old winger currently finds himself alongside two of the team's best goal scorers, Norris and Tage Thompson, on the top line. Benson has recorded an assist in over half of the games he's played this season and is a solid streaming option in fantasy when healthy. Look for the promising winger to challenge his career high of 30 points, which he set in the 2023-24 regular season.

  • Sabres' Josh Doan: Pair of helpers Monday

Doan distributed two assists and recorded a shot on goal in Monday's 5-1 win over Winnipeg.

Doan slid the primary helper on Jason Zucker's power-play goal to open the scoresheet and helped Alex Tuch score the team's fourth goal. With the pair of apples, Doan is up to 10 assists, 18 points, 67 shots on goal and 26 hits through 26 games this season. The 23-year-old winger is already just one point away from surpassing his total of 19 through 51 regular-season games with Utah a year ago. He's played in an increased role this season while bouncing around Buffalo's lines, and he's currently skating middle-six minutes alongside Tuch. Doan has half of his points in the last 10 games and is heating up with three multi-point performances in that stretch. The Sabres have themselves a rising star in Doan, who has the potential to take off down the stretch if he sees another increase in playing time to his current role. He is a valuable add in deep leagues and could be a sneaky waiver-wire target in standard formats if his high-level play continues.

  • Sabres' Alex Tuch: Adds goal in big win

Tuch scored a goal, recorded three shots and blocked a shot in Monday's 5-1 win over the Jets.

Tuch scored less than 90 seconds after Kyle Connor's lone goal for the Jets to help Buffalo maintain a three-goal lead headed into the third period. With the twine finder, Tuch is up to nine goals, 23 points, 64 shots on goal, 26 hits and 25 blocks through 26 games this season. The 29-year-old winger has seven points in his last six games and has provided steady all-around numbers this season. If he can stay healthy, Tuch should earn his third 60-plus point regular season in the last four years, making him a strong play in nearly all fantasy formats.

  • Sabres' Bowen Byram: Lights the lamp in win

Byram netted a goal, recorded two shots and had three blocks in Monday's 5-1 win over the Jets.

Just 15 seconds after Jason Zucker scored the Sabres' first goal of the night, Byram found the back of the net to give Buffalo a 2-0 lead. With the twine finder, the 24-year-old defenseman is up to five goals, 12 points, 38 shots on goal and 31 blocks through 26 games this year. He's tied with Mattias Samuelsson for the second-most points from Buffalo's blue line this season. Byram is trending upwards offensively with seven points in his last 11 games. He also has 22 shots on goal and 11 blocks in that stretch, proving he can hold his own in category-based fantasy leagues. Byram should remain heavily involved for Buffalo in all situations, making him a decent option in deep fantasy leagues.

  • Sabres' Jason Zucker: Nets power-play goal

Zuckers had a power-play goal, two shots and two PIM in Monday's 5-1 win over the Jets.

Zucker started the festivities for the Sabres with a power-play goal less than three minutes into regulation. With the tally, the 33-year-old winger is up to seven goals, 14 points and 39 shots on net through 18 outings this season. Since his return to the lineup from an illness, Zucker has seven points in his last six games and has seen top-six minutes. After the second-best offensive regular season of his career a year ago, he has been a difference maker for the Sabres, who have won four of their last six games with him back in the lineup. Zucker is a top waiver-wire target in deep leagues and has solid streaming value in standard fantasy formats.

  • Sabres' Josh Norris: Trio of points in return

Norris scored two goals, collected a power-play assist and recorded three shots in Monday's 5-1 win over the Jets.

Norris excelled in his return to the lineup after missing 24 games due to an upper-body injury. He recorded a secondary helper on a power-play goal under three minutes into regulation before he scored a goal in each of the first and third periods. The Sabres displayed their faith in the 26-year-old forward by inserting him into the top-line center role alongside Tage Thompson, who moved to the right wing. Norris is set to benefit from that role and can provide decent coverage stats in fantasy. If he can stay healthy, Norris has great goal-scoring potential, making him a solid streaming option for the time being in most fantasy formats.

... See More ... See Less
  • Sabres' Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen: Strong effort in win

Luukkonen stopped 23 of 24 shots in Monday's 5-1 win over the Jets.

Outside of the Jets' lone goal from Kyle Connor midway through the second period, Luukkonen excelled in goal to pick up his third win in four tries. With his effort Monday, the 26-year-old netminder is up to a 4-3-1 record with a 2.51 GAA and an .899 save percentage through eight games this season. He has room to improve his save percentage, but performances like Monday's proved that he can keep the Sabres competitive defensively. With Buffalo currently just three points out of a playoff spot in the Atlantic Division, the Sabres should vie for enough wins this season to keep Luukkonen as a solid streaming option in most fantasy formats. His next chance to take the ice is Wednesday in Philadelphia.

  • Sabres' Zach Metsa: Sent down Monday

Metsa was sent to AHL Rochester on Monday, Heather Engel of NHL.com reports.

Metsa was called up by the Sabres in mid-November, but he didn't appear in any games during his two-week stint in the NHL. He'll head back to the minors since Josh Norris (upper body) will return from injured reserve Monday against Winnipeg. Metsa should have a chance to see more consistent playing time with Rochester.

  • Sabres' Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen: Slated to start

Luukkonen is expected to patrol the home crease against Winnipeg on Monday, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.

Luukkonen allowed three goals on 18 shots in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh, with the fourth goal being an empty-netter. He has a 3-3-1 record with a 2.73 GAA and an .891 save percentage across seven appearances this season. Winnipeg ranks 10th in the league with 3.13 goals per game this campaign.
