Scouting report
Fresh off an astounding upset over North Carolina this weekend, Georgia Tech and Josh Pastner's team will be playing with a lot of confidence as it heads into Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Yellow jackets did it by playing outstanding defense, holding UNC to 19 percent from 3-point range and getting to the free-throw line and converting 29 of 33 attempts.
"Look at our numbers defensively, and we've been really good," Pastner said. "This isn't the first time we've been good defensively."
Duke shoots at a respectable 35.4 percent from beyond the arc, but it's efficient shooting from the field at 48 percent, makes the Blue Devils very difficult to defend. They can play inside and out with Luke Kennard being a consistent threat to score every time he touches the ball -- either from the 3-point line or by driving and getting his own basket around the rim.
The Blue Devils are fourth in offensive efficiency in the country. Georgia Tech is 50th in defensive efficiency altogether, but it doesn't paint a picture of how stingy its defense has been of late. The Yellow Jackets are 29th in field goal percentage defense, and third in blocked shots per game. Kennard was the only player who shot over 50 percent in its loss to Virginia Tech. There's an opportunity for Georgia Tech's defense to continue its dominance on Wednesday.
Matchup to watch
Like North Carolina, who Georgia Tech held 15 percent below its shooting average, Duke is an offensive juggernaut averaging 82.8 points per game. The Yellow Jackets have been a different team at home than they are on the road, though. They average 72 points per game at home, versus 63.6 on the road. So while Duke's offense gets the attention, Georgia Tech may need to put up a fight on the offensive end to have a puncher's chance.
Josh Okogie dropped 26 points against the Tar Heels in the upset from this past weekend. They will need a similar performance, along with strong play from Ben Lammers, to make it close on the road.
Odds and pick
SportsLine odds: Duke -19.5
Pick: Duke -19.5
Even with the chaos in Durham -- from Grayson Allen's suspension to Coach K's surgery -- I feel like the Blue Devils will have no issues taking care of its last opponent they face before K undergoes surgery. The Blue Devils have won 33 of the last 36 matchups in the series.
