Following a humorous (but ultimately unproductive) social media row with Steve Elkington during the U.S. Open, Rory McIlroy has decided to take his talents off of social media for the time being. 

"Rory is so bored playing golf ... without Tiger, the threshold is prolly 4 majors with 100mill in bank," Elkington wrote on Twitter.

McIlroy clapped back.

McIlroy revealed at the Irish Open on Wednesday in a pre-tournament press conference that he has turned his Twitter password over to his wife Erica.

"I must have wrote that tweet and deleted it about five times before I actually sent it," McIlroy told reporters at Portstewart Golf Club where he is the host and defending champion of this tournament. 

"I sort of regretted sending it at the end. I actually gave my wife Erica my phone and said, 'Change my Twitter password and don't tell me what it is.' So as for the time being, I'm off social media just because of that reason. I don't need to read it. It's stuff that shouldn't get to you and sometimes it does."

The dream scenario? McIlroy goes on a run where he rolls off three wins in two months or something like that, and his only tweets are sent by Erica at Elkington of her husband holding trophies. That would be pretty fantastic.
