Under Armour CEO on Jordan Spieth: 'Going to cost us a lot of money'
Jordan Spieth is costing (and making) Under Armour a LOT of money.
Winning major championships is good for business. Both for golfers and the companies that sponsor them. Jordan Spieth knows this. So does Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank.
“He’s a special guy,” Plank said of Spieth recently. “He’s going to win a lot of golf tournaments, and that’s going to end up costing us a lot of money at some level, but I’d say it’ll probably be some of the best money we ever spent.”
Spieth just signed a new 10-year deal with UA earlier this year and, as Darren Rovell pointed out, it's likely rife with incentives. Incentives like, say, winning the only two majors played since signing that contract.
Dan Patrick recently had a good debate on his radio show about whether Nike would trade Rory McIlroy to Under Armour to have Spieth. That the debate is even viable means that Spieth's Under Armour contract is probably in the ballpark of the $200 million one McIlroy reportedly received from Nike.
Rovell also recently contrasted the decline of Tiger Woods with Spieth's rise in the world of marketing.
Nike doesn't yet have a line for Rory McIlroy, but most expect that will be the case. In the meantime, Under Armour -- which sponsors Masters winner Jordan Spieth from head to toe -- is making up huge ground.
"We can't keep his stuff in stock," Baker said. "Under Armour did decent before Spieth, but once he won the Masters, it was lock-the-doors good."
So he's also currently making them a lot of dough. Which is the whole point to begin with.
