WATCH: Jack Nicklaus pays tribute to Verne Lundquist with a hearty, 'Yes sir!'
Nicklaus saluted the longtime CBS broadcaster on a job well done with a reference to his 1986 Masters win
Verne Lundquist called his last SEC game on Saturday in the SEC Championship Game between Alabama and Florida. His final sign-off was incredibly emotional. Lundquist will still call the Masters and continue working for CBS, but the end of his college football career -- his last game is this Saturday in the Army-Navy Game -- is a special occasion to celebrate.
The well-wishes and tributes rolled in shortly after Alabama put the finishing touches on a rout of Florida, and Jack Nicklaus was among those sending his regards. Lundquist was famously on the microphone for Nicklaus' last, and most famous, Masters win in 1986. When Nicklaus made the birdie putt at No. 17 on his way to shooting 30 on the back nine for the one-stroke win over Tom Kite and Greg Norman, Lundquist bellowed, "Yes sir!"
Nicklaus re-paid the favor over the weekend.
"Verne, you've been a great friend for a long time," said Nicklaus. "You've been great for golf. You've been great for college football. Glad you came our way. Yes sir!"
Verne, as you call your last championship game, thanks for one of my favorite memories 30 years ago. Yes sir! #86Masters#SECChamp25pic.twitter.com/373YXeaux7
