The agent for Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter says Carpenter will retire after the season, the Boston Globe reports.

"Chris basically came back from five career-ending surgeries," agent Bob LaMonte told the Gloobe. "I don’t think you’ll ever see anyone do that again. He had a sixth one and it was too many. He had a great career, a great human being."

Carpenter may have the opportunity to work in the organization after his playing career is over, perhaps in a front-office role. The 2005 National League Cy Young Award winner, Carpenter went 144-94 with a 3.76 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 1,697 strikeouts in 2,219 1/3 innings over 15 seasons.
