Rockies get Reid Brignac for cash, player to be named later from Rays
The Rockies acquire shortstop Reid Brignac from the Rays.
The Rockies have acquired shortstop Reid Brignac from the Rays for cash and a player to be named later, the club announced Thursday.
Brignac, 27, went 2 for 21 (.095) in 21 at-bats for the Rays in 2012. Over a five-year career, Brignac has a .227/.268/.317 (68 OPS+) batting line.
The Rays drafted Brignac in the second round of the 2004 draft and he shot up farm system rankings. He was Baseball America's 17th-ranked prospect before the 2007 season and remained in the top 80 for the next three seasons. His best minor league season came as a 20-year-old in 2006, when he hit .321/.376/.539 in 128 games betweein High-A and Double-A.
Although he's become one of the game's better defensive shortstops, his bat never developed the way his early minor league performance suggested it would.
