The Indians have unfortunately introduced us to the term, 'testicular contusion'
First it was catcher Yan Gomes and then Sunday it was third baseman Juan Uribe
This is the most physically painful thing about baseball I'll ever have to write. In less than a week, two members of the first-place Cleveland Indians suffered contusions to their man regions thanks to baseballs.
First up, it was Yan Gomes, taking this shot to the cup area on Tuesday:
We all feel your pain, Yan.
Unfortunately, third baseman Juan Uribe joined the club on Sunday. It wasn't just that he was hit. It was that he was hit, you know, right there by a 106-mph shot off the bat of Mike Trout.
Though Gomes was most certainly wearing a cup -- c'mon, he's a catcher -- there are conflicting reports on Uribe. Most, however, point to him not wearing a cup. That's a dangerous game to play in the infield and it would appear Uribe lost this game.
Indians manager Terry Francona said the following regarding Gomes on Tuesday and it could be used again for Uribe (thenewstribune.com):
"I don't think he's probably having the best night of his life."
Cups aren't foolproof (Gomes is our example there), but they at least cut down on the risk of further injury. It's like a seat belt.
Now I'm off to hopefully never think about this again.
