Sunday night at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees immortalized longtime captain Derek Jeter by retiring his No. 2 and dedicating a plaque in Monument Park. The next stop for Jeter is Cooperstown.

The Astros spoiled Jeter's night with a 10-7 win over the Yankees (box score), and the game was more lopsided than the final score would lead you to believe. Houston scored six runs in the first inning and were up 9-0 by the fourth. The Yankees did bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but alas, there was no miraculous comeback on Jeter's night.

The big blow in that six-run first inning was Alex Bregman's grand slam. Bregman grew up idolizing Jeter and wears No. 2 in his honor. As he rounded the bases after the grand slam, Bregman tugged at his jersey and pointed to the No. 2 on his back.

"I guess it was the No. 2 magic tonight," said Bregman to reporters, including the New York Post's Zack Braziller, after the game. "It was a really cool moment, Sunday Night Baseball. I was at dinner with (ESPN broadcaster Aaron) Boone, and I told him, I said, 'Hey, you never know. No. 2, Derek Jeter Night, it might happen.' When I hit it, I was like, 'Holy cow.'"

Bregman, a natural shortstop who plays third base for the Astros in deference to Carlos Correa, is off to a bit of a slow start this season. The grand slam was his first home run of the year, and he's still hitting only .258/.342/.352 overall. Perhaps the homer on Derek Jeter night at Yankee Stadium will get him going.

Either way, that must have been a pretty cool moment for the kid. Not only was Bregman in the ballpark to see Jeter's number retirement ceremony, but he also got to smash a grand slam to take all the energy out of the crowd.
