Nationals' Tim Cate: Promoted to Triple-A
Cate was promoted Friday to Triple-A Rochester, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
A second-round pick of the Nationals in the 2018 MLB Draft, Cate mostly struggled in a starting role in the early part of his professional career. He converted to a bullpen role this year and is now just one step away from the majors after delivering a 3.38 ERA with 19 strikeouts across 18.2 innings of relief at Double-A Harrisburg.

Nationals' Tim Cate: Headed to big-league camp
The Nationals announced Wednesday that Cate would be invited to big-league spring training as a non-roster player.
Cate is one of several top pitching prospects in the organization that will report to big-league spring training, despite having no prior experience in the upper levels of the minors. The 23-year-old lefty claimed Washington's Minor League Pitcher of the Year award in 2019 after racking up 139 strikeouts and posting a 3.07 ERA over 143.2 innings between stops at Low-A Hagerstown and High-A Potomac.

Nationals' Tim Cate: Headed to summer camp
Cate is part of the Nationals' 60-man player pool, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
The southpaw made it to High-A Potomac last season, posting a 3.31 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 66:19 K:BB in 73.1 innings, and his presence in the 60-man pool is purely so he can continue his development. Cate's plus curveball could eventually win him a spot in the Nats' rotation, but it won't be in 2020.
