A key NFL executive said Thursday that St. Louis planners must build a new stadium in the area in order to keep the Rams from relocating to another city, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

NFL executive vice president Eric Grubman came to St. Louis Thursday to meet with the state's two-man stadium team and confirmed that Rams owner Stan Kroenke "said he’s going to keep his options open and he’s looking.

"We’re looking for a solution to the St. Louis Rams to be the St. Louis Rams, not for some other team to be the St. Louis Rams," Grubman added.

St. Louis is in the planning stages for a new riverfront stadium, but even if the downtown project moves forward and a new stadium is built, it doesn't necessarily mean the Rams will stay, per CBSSports.com NFL Insider Jason La Canfora Tuesday.

Kroenke has already announced his intent to build a stadium in the Los Angeles area. The Edward Jones Dome, opened in 1995, has been the home of the Rams for the last 20 years.
