A prop bet (short for proposition bet) is a wager on whether or not a particular occurrence will happen in a game aside from the main outcome. While the standard three markets in NFL betting (spread, money line, total) are all based around the final result of the game, prop bets isolate certain players, teams or events that could happen during the game.
NFL player props are wagers that involve a particular outcome for an individual player related to his performance. These could include the player’s total statistical output in a particular category, or whether the player will accomplish a specific event during the course of the game.
One of the most common NFL player prop bets involves which players will score touchdowns in a game. Many players on each team will be listed with odds for an anytime touchdown that will win if that player is credited with scoring a touchdown. Quarterback passing touchdowns are not included in anytime touchdowns, as the player who catches the pass and scores is credited as the anytime touchdown scorer. Bettors can also take on more risk by predicting which player will score the first and last touchdown in game, or they can back a player to score multiple touchdowns. Passing props are available for quarterbacks who are expected to start a game. These involve a player reaching a statistical marker or going over/under a total listed by a sportsbook in each stat. These include pass yards, completions, attempts, touchdowns and interceptions, as well as longest successful completion by a quarterback. Rushing props are available for players who have a reasonable chance to record a rushing attempt in a game. These include rush yards, rush attempts and longest rush. Rushing yardage can also be combined with passing or receiving yardage to offer a separate prop available for betting. Receiving props are available for players who have a reasonable chance to catch a pass in a game. These include receptions, receiving yards and longest reception.
