Nail Yakupov ties game with 4 seconds left, then goes crazy
Nail Yakupov's celebration on Thursday night was amazing.
The Edmonton Oilers' 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night is the hands-down winner for craziest game of the season to this point.
The only real way to describe it: completely bonkers.
The two teams couldn't stay out of the penalty box, and as the Kings tried to cling to a 1-0 lead late into the third period before all hell broke loose.
The highlight of the night -- and the young season to this point -- was Nail Yakupov tying the game with 4.7 seconds left and then losing his mind with the celebration of the year, sliding the entire way across the ice on his knees in a manner that reminded many of Theo Fleury during his Calgary Flame days.
There will no doubt be people who complain about that celebration and without trying to be too harsh or over the top, those people are terrible. Sports are fun, and that was a huge goal capping off an incredible and somewhat improbable night.
Why so much emotion?
Because with just over a minute to play in the third period the Oilers thought they already scored the game-tying goal only to have it taken away on a controversial call by the officials as Sam Gagner was called for interfering with Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.
The NHL's attempt at explaining the reversal and why the interference wasn't immediately called:
At the General Managers direction (March 13, 2012) a procedural change was requested to ensure that all available information at ice level is exchanged prior to the awarding of a goal. Following the scoring of a goal where there was traffic and action in the area of the crease and goalie interference may come into play all four officials are to come together in the referees crease. Once in the crease the team is to communicate all possible information in determining the validity of the goal. The down low ref is still to make a goal or no goal signal on the play and then meet with his colleagues if there was contact and action involving the goalie to discuss the play.
Oilers fans obviously didn't care about the how and the why, they were just livid that their team's opportunity to tie the game had passed for the moment. And then they littered the ice with garbage for several minutes while chanting, "Ref you suck!" following the call.
Once order was restored, Yakupov happened. And that was awesome.
The Oilers completed the comeback in overtime when Gagner scored on a power play after the Kings were whistled for a too many men on the ice penalty.
