WATCH: Bruins announcer Jack Edwards loses it after missed call
Boston Bruins announcer Jack Edwards lost his mind on Saturday after a Columbus Blue Jackets goal that followed a missed call at the other end of the ice.
Whatever your opinions are when it comes to Boston Bruins play-by-play man Jack Edwards, you have to admit that when he goes on one of his rants it can be some of the most entertaining television in the NHL. Over the top? Sure. But always entertaining.
He was in rare form on Saturday night when the Bruins gave up a goal to Columbus' Matt Calvert after a shot at the opposite end of the ice hit the safety netting and play was allowed to continue after the officials missed it.
The entire sequence is in the video above, complete with Edwards correctly spotting right away that the puck went out of play, insisting that the play could be reviewed with time being put back on the clock, and then absolutely blowing a gasket after Columbus scored and the play was not reviewed.
Here is the NHL's explanation for why the goal was allowed to stand:
At 17:43 of the second period in the Boston Bruins/Columbus Blue Jackets game, the puck appeared to hit the spectator netting in the Columbus zone and play continued until the Blue Jackets scored a goal at 19:09. According to Rule 85.1, play shall be stopped when the puck hits the spectator netting unless it goes unnoticed by the on-ice officials, in which case "play shall continue as normal and resulting play with the puck shall be deemed a legitimate play." Since play continued and the puck was not directed into the net as an immediate result of hitting the spectator netting, this is not a reviewable play and the on-ice decision stands - good goal Columbus.
Calvert's goal gave Columbus a 5-2 lead going into the third period, where they would later extend it to 6-2.
