Chelsea vs. Valencia score: Pulisic gets Champions League goal, but both sides blow chances in frantic draw
It was easily one of the most entertaining UCL games in years
In one of the most entertaining Champions League group stage matches in recent memory, Valencia and Chelsea played out a 2-2 draw at Mestalla on Wednesday in a result that's better for the Blues than it is for Valencia. Wednesday's game had it all: four goals, world-class saves, unbelievable misses and a called overturned on VAR all within 90 minutes.
Carlos Soler opened the scoring for Valencia 40 minutes in following two unbelievable misses from teammate Maxi Gomez, but Chelsea responded in the next minute as Mateo Kovacic got his first goal for the club with a lovely low strike.
In the second half, it was American Christian Pulisic who scored his first UCL goal for the Blues, putting them in the drivers seat to win the match and all but cement a spot in the next round. But the match was far from over.
Valencia won a penalty kick that Kepa saved brilliantly before Los Che leveled with less than 10 minutes to go on a wonder goal from Daniel Wass. Seven minutes of added time meant a winner was still possible for either side, and both had clear chances. Valencia had more of those opportunities, but the finishing touch for the hosts was off when they needed it most. Rodrigo missed two clear-cut chances in a game that could have easily finished 6-6, let alone 2-2.
The game saw Valencia produced 18 shots, while Chelsea had 16. Each team put six on frame.
The result sees both of teams on eight points with Ajax taking on Lille later in the day. Valencia has the head-to-head over the Blues, meaning Valencia needs to at least match Chelsea's result on Matchday 6 to move on. Valencia goes to Ajax, while Chelsea hosts Lille.
Valencia 2, Chelsea 2 (FT)
Seven added minutes!
Goal Valencia! Wass! Golazo! Game on!
This game couldn't be more intense. Pressure on Valencia. Frantic play. Kepa the hero so far.
After VAR, it's reviewed, and Pulisic is considered onside. By a hair! Advantage Chelsea.
GOAL CHELSEA! Pulisic!
