Juventus vs. Inter Milan score: Inter earn crucial Serie A win, as Juve slip out of Scudetto race

A controversial re-taken penalty in first-half stoppage time was the game's only goal

Inter Milan picked up a vital, 1-0, victory over Juventus at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday. The win marks a huge turning point for the Scudetto race in Serie A. Inter Milan's win -- which came on Hakan Calhanoglu's re-taken penalty in first-half stoppage time -- means that Inter are still very much in the thick of the fight for the title, while Juventus are now out of the race. 

Juventus lost their first Serie A match of 2022 on Sunday. Juve was undefeated in the league since a November defeat against Atalanta. Calhanoglu's penalty, meanwhile, gives Simone Inzaghi a very important win after a difficult moment and can be a new start that can give Inter a boost for the end of the season. The Scudetto race is now a matter between AC Milan, Napoli and Inter Milan.

Juventus were better in the first part of the match, which was really tense as expected. The first yellow card arrived only one minute after kickoff after Lautaro Martinez accidentally kicked Manuel Locatelli in the face. Locatelli, a Juventus midfielder, was forced to go out after since he couldn't go on. Juventus had a better start and had few chances, especially through strikers Dusan Vlahović and Paulo Dybala. Juventus' best chance to go ahead early saw Giorgio Chellini's attempt went the post. 

It looked like it would be a scoreless first half before a chaotic episode after the 45th minute. Alvaro Morata stepped on Denzel Dumfries, and the referee conceded a penalty to Inter Milan. Calhanoglu's initial penalty was saved by Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, but then the ball ended up in the back of the net on a rebound. However, the referee called a foul on Juventus during the fight for the rebound, and then the VAR got involved. The video assistant referee decided the penalty should be retaken because Matthijs de Ligt was inside the box when Calhanoglu kicked the ball. It was a very unusual decision that won't be forgotten by Juventus fans in the coming weeks. Calhanoglu did not miss his second chance.

The second half started as the first one with Juventus pushing, trying to find the equalizer.  Dybala and Dusan Vlahović both had chances they couldn't convert in the early stages of the second half. But it was Denis Zakaria who came the closest to an equalizer in the 73rd minute. Zakaria had a shot hammer the post after the slightest of touches by Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

The end of the game was quiet compared to what happened to wrap up the first half, and Inter escaped with a 1-0 victory. You can catch Serie A all season long on Paramount+.
