There was nearly a disastrous, horrific incident on Wednesday in the Champions League. Fans of the Russian club Spartak Moscow fired a flare toward the match ref during the match against Maribor. The flare came awfully close to striking the official, and it really could have hit any of the players on the field, too. Take a look:

Thankfully nobody was hurt, but let's hope the fan that fired the projectile gets punished. That could have caused a serious, potentially life-threatening injury. It goes without saying it has no place in the game.
