Real Madrid vs. Barcelona score: Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham fire Los Blancos to heated El Clasico win

Real Madrid won the first El Clasico of the season 2-1 against Barcelona at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday in a match where the goals took place in the first half and the serious tension in the second half with teams having to be separated following Pedri's second yellow for a dangerous tackle on Aurelien Tchouameni.

It was a difficult start to the game for the guests who were not able to counter the pressure of the home side in the Spanish capital. In the third minute in the game, Real Madrid were awarded a penalty for a foul of Lamine Yamal on Vinicius Jr, but after a VAR review, the referee overturned his decision and instead called an offensive foul against the home team. It didn't take too long for Xabi Alonso's side to score the first one with Kylian Mbappe, few minutes after the Frenchman saw his opening goal disallowed by offside.

Despite Real Madrid's dominance in the opening 45 minutes, Barcelona were able to find the equalizer through Fermin Lopez. Arda Guler lost the ball in a dangerous area, and Marcus Rashford quickly capitalized with a perfect assist for Fermin, who made it 1-1. A few minutes before halftime, Jude Bellingham's goal to make it 2-1 put the game back on track for the Spanish giants, who were able to keep the positive result in the second half also after missing a penalty via Mbappe, who saw his attempt saved by Wojciech Szczesny. This is a huge win for Real Madrid that are now leading the LaLiga standings with a five-point margin on the competitors. Meanwhile, Vinicius Jr. appeared unhappy with Alonso's decision to substitute him, heading straight to the dressing room before later returning to the sidelines. While the final result was positive, the incident could impact the atmosphere in the locker room as the season continues.

Lamine Yamal spoke too soon

Ahead of the Sunday's match, the tension was unnecessarily raised by the quotes of Lamine Yamal, who appearing on the YouTube channel for the Saudi Kings League, compared Porcinos FC to Real Madrid alongside former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique. "They rob; they complain," Yamal said, referring to Real Madrid's responses to refereeing decisions, and Piqué added that, "It's not debatable."

Last season, Real Madrid went as far as to demand new officials for the Copa Del Rey final after the referees who were set to oversee the match, Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea and Pablo Gonzalez Fuertes, spoke out after receiving abuse ahead of the match, which included Real Madrid TV. Los Blancos claimed that speaking out would make the referees unbiased in their decisions. However, the pressure was on the Spanish star, who failed to perform at his usual level. After the final whistle, Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois and Vinicius Jr appeared particularly frustrated with Yamal's display, but it was Dani Carvajal who confronted Yamal before the scuffle took place.

It's a lesson the young talent will need to keep in mind for the next time.

Real Madrid showed dominance

Looking at what happened on the pitch, the team coached by Xabi Alonso showed to be the best one and dominated in both first and second half. The Blancos were able to contain the attacking lineup of the guests, including Yamal, who looked isolated and unable to deploy his skills. Alonso's side displayed clear tactical superiority, despite conceding the 1-1 equalizer to Fermín following a rare mistake from Arda Guler this season, the only one of the match on Sunday. Looking ahead, Real Madrid can now count on a five-point advantage and sent a clear message to their historical rivals ahead of another exciting head-to-head.

Is there an issue between Mbappe and Vinicius?

Vinicius Jr. looked angry with Alonso's decision to substitute him, heading straight to the dressing room before later returning to the sidelines. Despite that isolated incident, likely irrelevant in the long run, questions remain about the tactical coexistence of Vinicius Jr. and Mbappe within Alonso's tactical setup. Mbappe has already scored 16 goals in 13 appearances across all competitions, while Vinicius has looked less comfortable this season compared to the Frenchman. It's not impossible, perhaps too early, to imagine a different future for one of them.

Chaos after the final whistle

The atmosphere on the sidelines was tense both before and after the final whistle. Both teams appeared to be exchanging provocations, with players like Vinicius Jr and Alejandro Balde visibly furious, while Pedri received a second yellow card and was sent off before the final whistle. The Spanish police even intervened to calm the situation, as Xabi Alonso and the technical staff of both sides appeared unable to regain control.

HT: 2-1 for Real Madrid

It's 2-1 at halftime for Real Madrid after an incredibly exciting for half at the Santiago Bernabeu. Xabi Alonso's side have created at least three clear chances to extend their lead, but they also conceded one opportunity that the visitors capitalized on to score their only goal so far with Fermin Lopez in what was probably the only mistake made by Real Madrid. Lamine Yamal has struggled to find the space he needs to display his talent, while Real Madrid look far more focused and scored two goals with Mbappe and Bellingham.

Injury updates

Real Madrid come into the match with two defensive injuries as David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are set to miss out on the match. Given that neither has been among the first-choice options in the back line, that only hurts the strength of the Madrid bench more than anything.

For Hansi Flick's Barcelona, it's quite a different story as he's missing four starters. Joan Garcia and Marc Andre ter Stegen are both out, leaving him with his third-choice keeper, and both Gavi and Dani Olmo are missing from the midfield, while the attack will be down Lewandowski and Raphinha. That forces an entire rethink in the Barcelona attack, where Yamal and Marcus Rashford will be key to Barcelona's performance here.

What happened with Lamine Yamal?

Appearing on the YouTube channel for the Saudi Kings League, Yamal compared Porcinos FC, who will be set to face the team that Yamal is co-owner of, La Capital FC, to Real Madrid alongside former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué.

Last meeting

If this match is anything like when these two last met in May near the end of the LaLiga season, we're all in for a treat. Real Madrid went ahead by two goals in the first 15 minutes via a brace from Kylian Mbappe before Barcelona stormed back. Barcelona scored four goals in the first half, including a brace by Raphinha. While Real Madrid did score again late, for Mbappe to complete a hat trick, it wouldn't be enough, eventually falling to their rivals.

Grading Real Madrid's and Barcelona's summer transfers

Let's take a look at the summer signings for both teams and assess how they've performed so far:

Franco Mastantuono, Real Madrid

Franco Mastantuono joined this summer from River Plate for around $40 million, and he's considered one of the top talents in world soccer. He has already shown it at his new club, considering he played 11 matches, scored one goal and provided one assist so far. Of course, there is plenty of room for improvement, but the start has been promising. Alonso knows really well that he needs the time to improve and adapt to a new country, league and team where the pressure will be on him on a daily basis. Grade: A-

Marcus Rashford, Barcelona

The big surprise of this 2025-26 season. Let's be honest, expectations were low when this move happened, but the English striker has proven to be exactly what this team needed since joining on loan from Manchester United. With five goals and six assists in 12 appearances under Hansi Flick, including two braces against Newcastle and Olympiacos in the opening three Champions League matches, he might have finally found the perfect place to shine. Grade: A

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Real Madrid

When Real Madrid signed Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool ahead of the Club World Cup this summer, the general idea was that Xabi Alonso could count on an experienced player for key matches. However, it turned out that this isn't the case, at least for now. The Real Madrid defender had to face a muscular injury that is preventing him from playing since Sept. 16, and the coach is currently opting to play Federico Valverde when Dani Carvajal is not available, and so far only lost the Madrid Derby against Atletico without the former Liverpool star. Grade: C-

Alvaro Carreras, Real Madrid

When Real Madrid signed Alvaro Carreras from Benfica this summer for $50 million, there was some skepticism around what he could bring in the short term to this club, but he immediately proved all wrong. Carreras is the kind of player who Real Madrid needed, a left-back who played 11 matches so far between all the competitions, and proved to be consistent and solid defensively in each game. Grade: B
