WWE Raw results, recap, grades: Shinsuke Nakamura turns on Seth Rollins after six-man tag match main event
Nakamura helped Rollins and Cody Rhodes get the win before putting down the world heavyweight champion
Two nights after a massive SummerSlam, WWE returned to television with Raw on Monday night. A night filled with entertaining action ended with a surprise turn in the main event, when Shinsuke Nakamura first helped Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes defeat The Judgment Day before turning on Rollins as the show went off the air.
Nakamura filled in for the six-man tag match main event after Sami Zayn was attacked backstage and left not medically cleared to team with Rollins and Rhodes. After getting the win, Rollins and Rhodes managed to put their differences aside and celebrate but that left Rollins' guard down for a Kinshasa from Nakamura as the final statement of the night.
CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Target Center in Minneapolis.
Shinsuke Nakamura lays out Seth Rollins to close the show
Cody Rhodes opened the show with a promo, talking up his win over Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam and the post-match show of respect from Lesnar when he was interrupted by Seth Rollins. Rollins said that if Rhodes believes he can beat anyone, why not prove it against the world heavyweight champion. Before Rhodes could accept a match, they were interrupted by The Judgment Day. After a brief exchange of words, a brawl broke out, leading to Sami Zayn making the save and Rhodes laying a challenge for Judgment Day to take on himself, Rollins and Zayn. Zayn and Rollins argued throughout the show, with Zayn playing peacemaker.
Rhea Ripley also had to take on the peacekeeper role for her side, trying to calm Finn Balor and Damian Priest after the two began arguing over Priest's attempted assistance at SummerSlam costing Balor his match with Rollins. Balor was speaking to JD McDonagh before the confrontation and McDonagh was caught attacking Zayn backstage later in the show. It was then announced that Zayn was not cleared for the match, leading Shinsuke Nakamura -- who defeated Bronson Reed earlier in the night -- to offer to step in as the third man alongside Rollins and Rhodes.
Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins & Shinsuke Nakamura def. The Judgment Day via pinfall when Rhodes hit Finn Balor with Cross Rhodes. Yet again, Priest's attempt to throw his Money in the Bank briefcase to Balor backfired, allowing Rollins to superkick the case into Balor's face, setting him up for the finish. After the match, Rhodes and Rollins jawed a bit before Zayn -- who returned to make a late save -- calmed the two down and they celebrated together. At that point, Nakamura delivered a Kinshasa to Rollins, leaving him down at out before leaving the ring as the show went off the air.
The turn from Nakamura was obvious once he offered to join Rhodes and Rollins, but it still is a solid move that gives Rollins a fresh opponent for the short-term. Rhodes and Rollins may clash down the road, but a title match between the two doesn't really work and would put WWE in a bit of a no-win position. While Nakamura isn't really a threat to win the belt at this point in his career, he certainly can hold his own for a month or two as a title challenger. A fun little end to a very good episode of Raw. Grade: B+
