WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: Jacob Fatu, Tama Tonga get best of Cody Rhodes, Jimmy Uso
Rhodes' rivalry with Kevin Owens got in the way of his duties as a tag team partner
Cody Rhodes is seeing red and it might be blinding him. The WWE undisputed champion's anger towards Kevin Owens cost him and Jimmy Uso a match against The Bloodline on WWE SmackDown.
Roman Reigns defeated Solo Sikoa in Tribal Combat on Monday Night Raw, but issues persist between the old and new Bloodline members. Jimmy found an ally in Rhodes amid Reigns and Jey Uso's absences, but it didn't work out well for Jimmy.
Speaking of things that didn't work out, the United States championship match between Shinsuke Nakamura and LA Knight was also impacted by The Bloodline.
CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Moda Center in Portland, Oregon.
Rhodes sees red, takes a loss to The Bloodline
Paul Heyman kicked off SmackDown by welcoming Rhodes to the ring. The Wiseman applauded Rhodes' run as undisputed WWE champion before revealing that Reigns will enter the Royal Rumble. Before their conversation could go further, Owens interrupted. Owens shunned Rhodes for shaking hands with The Rock on Monday and Heyman moments ago. Owens claimed that Rhodes would betray the fans by allowing Reigns to become champion again. Rhodes heard enough and ran into the crowd to attack Owens.
Inside the ring, Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga cornered Heyman. Jimmy rescued Heyman with a steel chair but was soon overwhelmed by the numbers. Security personnel failed to intervene but their presence gave Rhodes the time to rescue Uso.
Later in the evening, Tonga and Fatu interrupted LA Knight's match with Shinsuke Nakamura (more on that below). Rhodes and Uso rescued Knight, spurring SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis to book a tag team match.
The Bloodline (Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga) def. Cody Rhodes and Jimmy Uso via pinfall. Fatu was the strongest presence in the match, wearing down Uso. The makeshift tag team recovered late after Rhodes got the hot tag. Before they could secure the win, Rhodes darted off to brawl with Owens. Fatu capitalized on Rhodes' absence, bashing Uso's head against the announcers' table before finishing him with a moonsault. Elsewhere, the Rhodes and Owens brawl ended with the champion tackling his Royal Rumble challenger off an equipment box through two tables.
This week's SmackDown felt like filler compared to the Raw debut on Netflix. Reigns and Sikoa's absences were felt. I enjoy the spirit of Rhodes vs. Owens, but every week seems to turn into some sort of brawl. Hopefully, they find new angles to explore. Grade: B
