WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: Tensions heighten within The Bloodline ahead of Extreme Rules

The war between Sami Zayn and Jey Uso is nearing its boiling point, while Roman Reigns went face-to-face with Logan Paul

Roman Reigns provided Sami Zayn a big opportunity to move up The Bloodline ladder on Friday's edition of WWE SmackDown as the Tribal Chief came face-to-face with Logan Paul. In the end, however, it was Zayn and Jey Uso who were the show's real stars.

Reigns had enough of Jey's attitude. Following an encounter with Paul ahead of WWE Crown Jewel, Reigns assigned Zayn with the responsibility of dealing with his cousin's temperamental attitude. Zayn, who was officially welcomed into The Bloodline two weeks ago, now finds himself bearing more and more responsibility as a member of the group.

The Extreme Rules go-home episode of SmackDown also featured an intercontinental championship match pitting GUNTHER vs. Sheamus -- a sequel to their hard-hitting encounter at Clash at the Castle last month. New faces and old names also re-emerged in this week's edition of the blue brand.

Reigns-Paul takes backseat to Jey Uso-Zayn

Triple H opened the show by welcoming the WWE Universe to the season premiere of SmackDown. The Worcester fans were not given much time to acknowledge "The Tribal Chief" before Logan Paul made his entrance and traded barbs with various members of The Bloodline. Paul Heyman, special counsel to Reigns, worked in the upcoming Showtime boxing pay-per-view between Logan's brother Jake Paul and Anderson Silva, as well as other popular and controversial Internet celebrities. "Honorary Uce" Zayn prevented things from escalating and used many of The Usos' catchphrases, further integrating himself into the group.

The Bloodline were spotted in their locker room following Solo Sikoa's victory over Ricochet. Jey threatened Zayn for calling him a hothead, eliciting an intervention by Reigns. The undisputed champion accused Jey of being a hothead his entire life, and Reigns was no longer interested in dealing with it. Reigns assigned Zayn responsible for Jey's attitude, while a hesitant Zayn considered protesting but thought better of it.

New Day members Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston ran into Zayn and The Usos backstage. Woods and Kingston mocked Jey, congratulating him for having two daddies -- Zayn being one of them. Zayn challenged the pair to a match before Jey walked away frustrated.

New Day & Braun Strowman def. The Usos & Sami Zayn via pinfall after Kingston and Woods hit Jimmy with a double-team move. New Day found themselves a third man even bigger than their injured teammate Big E. Braun Strowman was enlisted to even out the numbers in their match against The Usos and Zayn. The tension between Jey and Zayn was rife throughout the match. Jey aggressively tagged himself in at one point, slapping Zayn's back. Disaster struck as Zayn and Jey argued outside of the ring. Strowman took advantage of the discourse and barreled over both men, giving Kingston and Woods the space to put away Jimmy with a tag team maneuver.

The Reigns vs. Paul build was cookie-cutter and only further exposed how inorganic this Crown Jewel headliner is. Fortunately, some gold was sifted from this week's SmackDown. Reigns' declaration that Jey is hotheaded further elevated Zayn's status among The Bloodline. Zayn being tasked with handling Jey could pencil an interesting, dynamic evolution in the bubbling rivalry between the two faction members. The tension between Jey and Zayn costing them the match made sense and should give Jimmy a greater role in the group with the discourse now directly impacting him. Also, Kingston and Woods were clever for acquiring a tag team partner as physically imposing as Strowman. Grade: B

• Solo Sikoa def. Ricochet via pinfall after flattening Ricochet with the Spinning Solo.
• Zelina Vega made her WWE return flanked by debuting NXT stars Legado del Fantasma (Santos Escobar, Cruz Del Toro and Joaquin Wilde). The group assaulted Hit Row (Top Dolla, Ashante Adonis and B-Fab) on their way to the ring.
• A retro video game-themed White Rabbit video promised a reveal at Extreme Rules on Saturday night.
• Raquel Rodriguez and Shotzi Blackheart def. Sonya Deville and Xia Li via pinfall after Rodriguez planted Deville with the Texana Bomb.
• Drew McIntyre failed in his attempt for revenge on Karrion Kross. McIntyre attacked Kross during his entrance but Kross ultimately got the upper hand by using a strap.
• LA Knight waved goodbye to Max Dupri. Knight beatdown Maximum Male Models members ma.ce and man.soor backstage. He informed Maxxine Dupri that he could no longer be something he is not, officially reverting to his LA Knight moniker.
• Intercontinental Championship: GUNTHER (c) def. Sheamus via pinfall after Ludwig Kaiser handed GUNTHER a shillelagh. GUNTHER appeared to tap during the match but it was not acknowledged by the referee.
