WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: The Rock's concert returns ahead of WrestleMania 40

What started as a comedy segment ended with a sinister address by The Rock

The Rock isn't joking around. Dwayne Johnson released the sequel to his iconic 2003 in-ring concert on WWE SmackDown but it's his disturbing closing address that will be remembered most.

The Rock kicked off SmackDown on Friday by roasting his WrestleMania 40 opponents Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins. The musical number got a chuckle out of fans; however, it didn't hold a candle to The Rock's more serious statements.

Much of the WrestleMania 40 card was filled out on Friday night. Three matches were formally agreed to or announced for next month's spectacle along with movement in the tag team title six-pack ladder match.

The Rock Concert returns

The Rock kicked off SmackDown with the sequel to his acclaimed 2003 in-ring concert. The Rock was accompanied by a two-person band as he roasted his WrestleMania opponents. Rhodes received the brunt of the insults.

That's when Dusty said with total frustration
That drugs and cheap condoms were a bad combination.

Rollins -- and Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant by proxy -- received barbs during the comedy segment, but Rhodes certainly got the worst of it. The Rock elicited the name of not only the late Dusty Rhodes, but also Cody Rhodes' mother.

The Rock's attempts at comedy were starkly contrasted by an ominous closing statement. He unveiled a personally-branded weight belt similar to the one Rhodes' carries. The Rock addressed Rhodes' mother with a promise to present her with the belt soaked in her son's blood at WrestleMania.

"The Rock is going to take this belt and he's going to beat your son. He's going to beat the piss out of your son and he's going to make your son bleed," The Rock said. "He's going to tear his skin, tear his flesh and he's going to whoop him. He's going to whoop him like a dog over and over and over again. Mama Rhodes, your son's blood is going to be on this belt."

The Rock's jokes were mostly low-effort and dated but his comedy was wonderfully contrasted by his sinister closing statement. The graphic, cold-blooded way The Rock addressed Rhodes' mom is one of the most adult-oriented promos in recent WWE history. It took an already huge WrestleMania main event to another level. You have to give The Rock some credit: he isn't phoning in this WrestleMania build. It'll make Rhodes and Rollins bigger stars in the long run. Grade: A+

• Legado del Fantasma (Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo) def. LWO (Joaquin Wilde and Cruz del Toro) via pinfall after hitting a pop-up soccer kick. Legado del Fantasma advanced to the second round of a qualifier for the tag team title six-pack ladder match at WrestleMania 40.
  
• AJ Styles hit LA Knight with a steel chair from behind and accepted his challenge to a match at WrestleMania.
• Jimmy Uso accepted Jey Uso's WrestleMania challenge in an intense backstage promo.
• Randy Orton def. Grayson Waller via pinfall after hitting an RKO. Kevin Owens saved Orton from a post-match attack by Austin Theory and Logan Paul. Orton nearly struck Owens with an RKO by mistake but they got on the same page quickly.
• Logan Paul will defend the U.S. title against Owens and Orton in a triple threat match at WrestleMania, SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis announced.
• Santos Escobar def. Dragon Lee via pinfall after landing the Phantom Driver. Rey Mysterio saved Lee and Carlito from a post-match beatdown before challenging Escobar to a one-on-one match next week.
• New Catch Republic (Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate) def. Pretty Deadly (Elton Prince and Kit Wilson) via pinfall with a double-Burning Hammer. They advanced to the second round of the tag team qualifier against Legado del Fantasma.
• Roman Reigns and Rhodes will go face-to-face next week.
• Bayley def. Dakota Kai via disqualification after being attacked by Damage CTRL. Naomi tried to rescue Bayley but was overwhelmed by the numbers.
