Amile Jefferson will miss Duke's huge game at Florida State on Tuesday night
Jefferson has been a top-20 player this year in college hoops, so is Duke destined to lose?
For the 15th time in their 17 games this season, the Duke Blue Devils will not have their full roster available when they play at 15-1 Florida State on Tuesday night.
They also won't have their head coach.
Interim coach Jeff Capel, who is running the show until Mike Krzyzewski is healthy enough to return from lower back surgery, said on Monday afternoon's ACC conference call that starting Duke big man Amile Jefferson won't play in the game against FSU. Jefferson suffered a bone bruise in his right foot in Duke's 93-82 win over Boston College on Saturday.
Duke, which is ranked seventh in the latest AP poll, has dealt with injuries and suspensions since the preseason. Freshmen Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum and Marques Bolden -- all of whom are now healthy -- didn't play throughout November. Then, in their second game back together, Grayson Allen's tripping incident forced Allen off the floor for one game.
Now, Jefferson -- who had started every game this season -- will sit for at least one game. Jefferson's bone bruise comes in the same foot he hurt last season, which ended his 2015-16 campaign and forced him to medically redshirt in order to play this season. FSU is ranked ninth in the latest AP poll. Tuesday night's game is one of the biggest in FSU's history. FSU and Notre Dame are the only unbeaten teams left in ACC league play, both at 3-0.
Duke has won five of its last seven games against the Seminoles. How will Duke adjust without Jefferson? We'll have a story Tuesday examining that, including a look at how Giles' role should change without Jefferson.
