The reigning college football national champions held tryouts recently for walk-on spots. One of the people hoping to make the team is 45-year-old Greg Morris.

He probably won’t make the cut -- the Post and Courier noted that Tigers coach Dabo Swinney “just smiled” when he was asked about Morris -- but in the event he does, he will become the oldest player to ever play for Clemson

In any event, by no means is his mission unprecedented. You may recall the story of Joe Thomas Sr., the 55-year-old walk-on at South Carolina State who became the oldest known player to ever see the field in a Division I football game.

Morris has a football background as a former high school cornerback. Today, he is an ex-master electrician who is taking classes at Clemson in the interpreting program. The decision to try out for the football team started as a joke between him and his wife, yet here Morris is trying out for the team.

For what it’s worth, Tigers receiver Hunter Renfrow -- the hero of the national championship victory over Alabama -- was once a walk-on. Morris isn’t Renfrow, but you can’t knock the guy for trying.
